Historic 25th Street, Ogden, UT

June 24th, 2010 · No Comments

A few weeks ago I went to Utah for work. June has been so busy, I’m just sorting through the photos now. I went on the trip with my coworkers Aimee and Ashanth. We worked a lot and didn’t have much free time, but I still have some cool shots and a few posts to share.

I flew out to Utah on the same night that I did the 25-mile UPAF bike ride. On the way out our flight was so delayed. Like 3 hours delayed. We were leaving at the time we should have been arriving. We landed in Salt Lake City, blearily found our rental car and drove up to Ogden, where we were staying. We finally got checked into our hotel at something like 2:00 a.m. And then we got up for work at 6:30 a.m. That was awesome.

My work was at Hill Air Force Base, where I was doing user interviews and observing user testing on an internal application that I designed. On base, the experience could not have been more opposite than our day-to-day work environment. Where in Chicago the office is totally casual, on base we had to dress in suits and heels and lock up our cell phones before entering secure facilities.

Anyway, enough about work. Our first night in Utah we were exhausted from only having had a few hours of sleep. Our hotel was on 24th Street in Ogden, Utah. Through our back parking lot was 25th Street, which is a historic stretch in Ogden. We were all tired, but we had to eat, so we decided to go just one block over and then call it an early night.

We explored the little historic downtown stretch for a bit, and then settled on Roosters Brewing for dinner. This is a local brewpub with two locations, the Historic 25th Street being the original location.

It was still nice and sunny out so we sat in a glassed-in outdoor dining room.

Flowers in a growler.

I tried a beer that they make called Polygamy Pale Ale and Ashanth tried a sampler of several of their beers. I think Aimee was too exhausted to go down the beer path!

For dinner I had a half salad and half pizza combo.

It was a steak fajita pizza!

I thought this was a great spot and would recommend it to anyone in the unlikely chance that they find themselves in Ogden, UT! I expected when travelling out there that we’d be eating at all chain restaurants, but we were able to search out smaller local places that were really great, although I think Subway did sneak it’s way in one time!

A Facial at SpaForever

April 22nd, 2010 · No Comments

Aimee sent me a promotional email for SpaForever (1917 N. Damen) where they were offering some really good deals on spa services. I’d always wanted to get a facial for a few reasons – Find out if my skin care regimen is here it should be – I’m not super hung up on aging and wrinkles, but if I should be doing something differently, I want to know. Also, everyone always raves about how they love getting a facial.. but what are they raving about? And finally, I had two spots on my face I wanted checked out.

So? I thought getting a facial was really relaxing. My technician explained a lot and told me about products but did not pressure me to buy anything, which I appreciated. She was more about educating and answering questions than trying to pimp products and services. She must have done about 30 steps with different creams and who knows what. And then there was a face, neck and shoulder massage. It was a good experience overall. I would think about getting a facial again, maybe just a couple times a year when they ran specials. I’d for sure go to SpaForever again.

Amish Friendship Bread – Cinnamon Raisin Walnut Muffins

March 17th, 2010 · 5 Comments

Amish Friendship Bread is bread made from sourdough starter that is shared in the same fashion as a chain letter. Someone, who knows when, starts the dough and it gets fed and reproduces like crazy. At the end you use a bit of your dough to make bread or muffins and then pass on bags of starter to your friends.

My coworker Aimee passed some starter on to me a few weeks ago. I took care of it, fed it, bathed it, in sickness and in health. About ten days later I added a few more ingredients and made it into cinnamon raisin walnut muffins. Dallas and I ate a bunch of them over a weekend. The rest I brought to work on Monday, where they were a big hit!

I passed extra starter dough onto Anjum and Jess. Hope their bread/muffins turned out as good as mine!

Happy Hour at Bull & Bear

January 26th, 2010 · No Comments

On Friday night a bunch of people from my team went out for happy hour at Bull & Bear, a bar around the corner from our office. Aimee, who is officially the PM of HH, called ahead to reserve a tap table for us. I’ve been to Bull & Bear before, but only to the bar area. This table area was new. Here’s how it works:

Each table has two beer taps, one Bud Light and one something else. Ours was Bud Light and Stella. Some of the other tables had different kinds of Goose Island beers. The waitress gets you glasses and starts the meter and then you are free to help yourself to all the beer you want. There’s a computer with a screen that displays how many ounces of each beer that you have poured. It’s a pretty cool concept. Dangerous. We had so many people we were kind of all mingling in front of the table and the table was serving as our own private bar. I can imagine people sitting at the table and just drinking glass after glass without even the delay of wait staff going to get your drinks. Also, we wondered how many people had gotten totally bombed and put their mouths under the taps! I’m sure there’s the obvious reason for this, but just seeing how many ounces you’ve poured without a dollar amount attached is pretty useless. 72 ounces? No idea how much that bill is.

After just about everyone left I somehow thought it was a good idea to go with Ryan and Doug to O’Leary’s Public House. I grabbed some grub and had one more beer. It was a nice surprise to see a Green Bay Packers flag hanging in there!

Keefer’s Kaffe

Keefer’s is located at 20 W. Kinzie St. I worked in that building for a year and I never noticed that there’s also a seperate restaurant, Keefer’s Kaffe, in that building. It’s more casual and lunch-y, than Keefer’s. A few weeks ago Aimee, Anjum and I went and got lunch at Keefer’s Kaffe. Good lunch option. Better than lunch at Keefer’s, which can be kind of formal and pricey. I had this chopped Greek salad (romaine, cucumber, grape tomatoes, pepperoncini, picked red onion, bell pepper, olives, feta, oregano vinaigrette) and it was awesome.
