Tommy & I have the same taste in shoes.

For Danny’s birthday we went out for dinner at Piece, a NewHaven-style thin crust pizzeria and brewery in Wicker Park. Doug and Naoko’s son Tommy and Pete and Allison’s daughter Abby hit it off. Abby is about to turn 3 and Tommy turned 2 back in June. I played with them a lot last night. They were hugging and dancing and throwing an origami ball that Naoko made. Piece is a pretty loud place, so even when they were screaming they didn’t cause a commotion. It was fun to see Tommy again and I’d only met Abby once when she was a tiny baby. She’s so cute. And now Pete and Allison have a second daughter, Lucy, who is only about 2 months old. Hopefully I’ll see her again before she is 3!

After Piece some of us went to The Long Room for a couple more drinks. It was fun, but we were tired from the night before, so we headed home around midnight.

Beers for Boobs (and Burrito House)

Last night Abby and a few of her friends hosted an event called Beers for Boobs at Gannon’s Pub. For $25 we got all of the wine, beer and liquor we could drink for 3 hours and Gannon’s donated 10% of the proceeds to Abby’s fund raising effort for a 3-day walk she is doing to benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure, which is the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures.

Abby is doing well and is about 60% of the way to her goal of raising $2,200.00. I think it’s so great that she’s going to be walking 60 miles over the course of 3 days to support the cause. It seems like hard work, but not if you compare it to what lies ahead for anyone with cancer. Still, 60 miles is far. I think we’ve all been affected by some sort of cancer, if not breast cancer, so if you’d like to help Abby reach her goal, you can donate to her fund raising effort here.

Ok, so back to last night: After doing our philanthropic duty by drinking our faces off, Dallas was really hungry so we went to Burrito House, a place that all of my friends have been visiting late-night for years. Somehow I managed to have never gone until last night. I have a feeling that it won’t be my last visit! I had a junior California burrito that was filled with shredded beef. I could only eat half of it so I took half home. It was really great. And close enough that we could sober up on a walk home afterwards.

Baby Quinn made such an early appearance a few weeks ago that Jen & Chad had their baby shower after he was born. Quinn wasn’t at the shower because he’s still in the hospital, but we did get to see photos and hear a lot of stories from the family. It kind of reminded me of Nancy’s baby shower when she announced they’d confirmed Riley’s adoption. In both we knew the baby’s sex, name, what they looked like, heard stories, etc. Maybe we should all just have celebrations after the babies are born and scrap the whole baby shower thing. I was never really into them anyway, although Saturday night’s baby shower was more like a regular night out except that it started way earlier (3pm) and we each brought a gift. Open bar and tons of food at an Irish pub.. that’s my kind of baby shower!

Every year Allison has a holiday party. This year, instead of just a party, she made dinner. And a really great one, at that. We had some smoked salmon with herbed goat cheese on toasted French bread to start things off. Then we had tenderloin with balsamic onions and horseradish sauce, au gratin potatoes with bacon, creamy mashed potatoes and green beans. No one could believe that Allison had never cooked tenderloin before. It was fantastic.

A lot of people brought desserts. Jen & Chris brought fudge made using Rachael Ray’s 5-minute recipe, Barbara made chess pie, and I brought the cookies I’d made earlier in the day. It was a fun, filling party.

This weekend was the perfect autumn weather. Luckily we broke out of that cold spell from earlier in the week. It was chilly, but sunny which made it nice and bright and crisp outside. We had a few friends over and we grilled meat, watched college football, played cards and rocked out to Guitar Hero.
