Birthday Dinner

September 9th, 2010 · No Comments

For dinner tonight Dallas and I were just going to meet up at Belly Shack, on our way home. We had planned to go out for dinner on Friday and so we thought we just wanted to do something quick tonight. But then I got off at Damen and was going to walk to Western. .. except then we just decided to eat in Wicker Park and I chose Bin 36 Wine Cafe, since I’d always wanted to try it and never have. I’ve been to its sister restaurant Bin 36 and also A Mano, before it closed.

Bin 36 Wine Cafe was pretty good. I had a flight of white wines and Dallas had a couple beers. Yes, they do have a small beer menu, if that’s what you prefer. We split a trio of build-your-own bruschetti. It came with toasts on the side and then you got to spread on 3 toppings: chicken with apples and blue cheese, white bean with tomatoes, or some smokey squash and veggies. We also split the hearts of romaine caesar salad. For entrees, Dallas had the seared flat iron steak with fried green tomatoes, corn on the cob and crispy prosciutto-herb butter. I had the sauteed Atlantic skate with summer ratatouille and tempura squash blossom. Shockingly, Dallas ate his tomatoes (he hates tomatoes), but I tasted a bite and they didn’t even taste like tomatoes. More tangy and firm. I don’t know if I’ve even had fried green tomatoes before, but these were really good. I liked my skate and my ratatouille was nice and light.

We passed on dessert at Bin 36 Wine Cafe because we remembered that I had a Groupon for iCream, which was just a few storefronts down the street. This is not your typical ice cream shop. At iCream you choose a base – regular ice cream, reduced-fat, soymilk, non-fat yogurt, low-fat yogurt, or sorbet – then choose from 30 flavors and 30 toppings. You can even choose a color for your concoction. You then watch them use their commercial-grade KitchenAid mixers to whip everything together and using liquid nitrogen they instantly make your ice cream, frozen yogurt, or sorbet.

I got white chocolate and Irish cream flavors with Oreos mixed in. Dallas got green tea colored green. I liked it. I liked how the Oreos were still really crunchy and fresh.. not like sometimes when they’ve been sitting out, or in the ice cream, forever and there’s no crunch. Dallas said his green tea ice cream was good too. It looked and tasted just like regular ice cream, even though they used their fancy science to make it in front of us. Still, I don’t know if I’ll be back often. It’s pretty gimicky and not cheap if you don’t have a coupon. Still, a great birthday dessert!

Celebrating with Wine, Cheese, and Pizza

Sauvignon Blanc vs. Chardonnay :: Bin 36, River North, Chicago

Anjum and I planned to take Aimee out for her birthday and Aimee insisted we also include my engagement, so there was a lot of celebrating to do last night! We walked over to Bin 36 and each got a flight of wine. Mine was the Sauvignon Blanc vs. Chardonnay flight.* We also shared the Triple XXX flight of cheese that included an American mozzarella, Brie, a goat cheese, Camembert, and one on the end I can’t remember. On the side we had apricots and figs and some truffled honey. Delicious, delicious, delicious. We need to do this more often!

Aimee and Anjum surprised me with a gift, which was a gift bag with a bunch of wedding magazines in it. It was fun to look through them, although I’m so not in a wedding mode yet. Someone needs to knock me on the head and remind me that when you get engaged then you have to plan a wedding. I think Dallas and I were just so excited to get engaged that when people immediately ask us when or where the wedding is, we have no answer just yet. But it was fun to page through and look at the different stuff. A lot of it is way more than anything we want, I think. One of the magazines was a destination wedding magazine and that was fun too.

After our cheese and wine extravaganza, we decided we should probably eat some real food. Downstairs at A Mano they were having their $5 pizza night so we ordered a few pizzas and had a bit more wine. Great night! I need to go out with the girls from work more often!

*Note to self: Favorite wine of the night was the 2008 Domaine Des Fontanelles Sauvignon Blanc.

Lunch With Greg

I was supposed to meet up with Greg for lunch last week but I was having a hectic time at work and was sick. I rescheduled about 3 times and ended up bumping it to the next week. Luckily, it worked out. If I thought I hadn’t seen Cinnamon for a while, I realized this week that I hadn’t seen Greg since May!

We planned to meet at A Mano. I arrived a little early so I was just waiting outside taking a few photos. Then I walked up to the door. Maybe you’re more observant than me and see those signs on the door, but it wasn’t until I was trying to push the locked door that I realized they were closed. The signs say, “A Mano is temporarily closed due to a burst water pipe and severe floor damage that is currently under repair. We hope to reopen as early as Monday 2/3/09. We apologize for any inconvenience.”

Hm. So, we didn’t know where to go and just went to Keefer’s which was really closeby. Probably would have just gone to Harry Caray’s but we’d already lunched there one time before. Keefer’s was good. More expensive than I’d expected, but whatever.. I only get to this guy very rarely. As we were leaving we said the same predictable thing we always say: “We need to get together more often.” And then we laughed and I said “See you in 6 months!” Hopefully it isn’t that long!

Lunch @ A Mano

Wild Mushroom & Caramelized Onion Pizza, A Mano, River North, Chicago

Last week we took Charley out for lunch at A Mano to wish him luck on his new job. Charley was FeedBurner’s CFO and is going off to do some CFOing at a new company.

At lunch I had the wood oven pizza comprised of wild mushrooms, caramelized onion, white truffle oil, taleggio cheese, hazelnuts and oregano. It was so rich and decadent. I shared slices with Alden, Paul Baker, and Charley and they all really liked it too.
