Music Classes at Old Town School of Folk Music

Makai kept asking me if he could go back to music class, so I knew he was interested. Also, at Christmas time, he told everyone he wanted a piano, a trumpet and a guitar for presents. He got the trumpet.

We’d previously done mixed age classes at Merry Music Makers, but I think he’s too old for that now. So the class I enrolled him in is just for preschoolers. It’s called Meet the Instruments and each week the kids get to learn about and play different types of instruments. So far it has been a lot of percussion and drums, but I hear we will also get to strings and wind instruments.

The photos are from the lobby area of the new annex where they have a “jam section”. Hanging on the wall each week are random instruments like guitars or banjos or mandolins. Makai loves to take a few minutes before or after class and play with the instruments. He seems to really enjoy the class as well.

I think, no matter what, it’s good exposure. In the school one morning Makai saw a plaque and asked me what it’s about. It was a Jazz musician, so on the way home we listened to Jazz music for kids and Makai said he liked it. A few weeks later the teacher mentioned something about New Orleans and Jazz music and Makai yelled out “I heard Jazz music! I like Jazz music!”
