Boston

February 29th, 2012 · No Comments

I’ve spent much of the last two weeks in Boston for work. Unfortunately, I didn’t really have time to do anything, besides work, or to meet up with any friends there. Mostly just worked and went back to the hotel and worked. I did manage to snap off a bunch of iPhone photos, though.

Both weeks I stayed at the historic Omni Parker House Hotel.

One of my rooms at the Omni Parker House.

View from my first room. That building on the right is the old city hall.

This view and the next were from my room on week two.

It was a corner room, so it had two windows.

The Parker House is where parker house rolls were invented.

Boston Cream Pie was also invented at the Parker House.

Now Boston is the city that never sleeps? According to the Parker House, I guess.

The hotel was a short walk from the office. Along the way, I walked part of The Freedom Trail.

The walk included a lot of old timey statues.

Very founding father-ly.

This T stop was a visual cue for me to turn.

I kept passing by a shop with this in the window. Ouch!

My new client, State Street.

The Roundarch office is stocked with Adirondack seltzer in several flavors. Very good.

A couple times I had lunch at Viga, across the street from the office.

One night I got a rice bowl from this Chipotle-like restaurant, Boloco.

In case you forget where you are…

One night I walked to Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market. On the way I passed this historic spot. You can’t tell what it is? The site of the Boston Massacre.

Faneuil Hall

Inside Quincy Market, I got a lobster roll and clam chowder at Boston Chowda.

Not the original Cheers location, this one is at Faneuil Hall.

Faneuil Hall

At Logan Airport

At O’Hare

Rick Bayless’s newest restaurant, Tortas Frontera.

I had a meal there and it was so good. I felt bad for the people sitting next to me eating McDonald’s.

Meeting Rory

Rory

Proud Daddy, Danny

Proud Grandma, Aunty Laura

Cousin Amanda, (2nd?) Cousin Tyler, Great Uncle BB, Great Aunty Glenna, Rory, Cousin Brad

Dallas and I got a turn with Rory.

This weekend we also went out to Danny and Caroline’s to meet their son Rory who was born on Monday, President’s Day, making him 5 days old when we met. I was surprised to see he had so much hair! And it wasn’t jet black, more brownish or auburn like Caroline’s. Also, I thought he’d just be laying there sleeping the whole time, but he was so alert and looking around the entire time. So cute.

Fiona’s First Birthday

Fiona’s Birthday Cake

She was definitely interested!

While all the cake-cutting action was going on, she was stuffing her face with cake! So cute.

Steve & Raiden

Bradley University Classmates: Killian, Kristin, Eric, Dallas, Suzi, Steve (with Fiona)

Raiden again. He’s so cute.

Eric & Suzi’s baby, Kal. He is about one and a half and all over the place. Hard to get a photo!

Fiona was born on our wedding day and right away we told Killian and Liz that we’d never forget how old she is, but we also might never be able to go to her birthday parties! Well, they pulled a switcheroo and had her birthday party on Saturday evening instead of Sunday, so we were able to attend. A bunch of Dallas’s classmates from college, Killian being one of them, were at the party and it was nice to visit with them. Also, Killian and Liz just moved into a beautiful new place and it was good to finally see it. Fiona loved her cake, which was from Dinkel’s (the best! I got Dallas a birthday cake there once).

Keeping with the birthday theme, after Fiona’s birthday party, we went out for dinner at Fork for Kristin’s birthday. By the way, we really liked that place. Delicious food and pretty reasonably priced, too.

Dallas trying to make sense of the enormous wine list.

Tempura of Bay Scallops with Ogo Seaweed, Ponzu & Grated Daikon

Bread between every course (except the dessert courses).

Unagi Terrine with Grapefruit, Red Curry & Kaffir Lime

Coriander-Encrusted Bobwhite Quail with Black Sesame, Watercress & Pomegranate

Maine Day Boat Lobster with Red Beet-Infused Spaetzle, Fermented Black Garlic & Horseradish

Broken Arrow Ranch Venison Loin with Toasted Espresso, Crumbled Oats & Boudin Noir

Granny Smith Apple & Greek Yogurt Sorbet with Meyer Lemon, Tarragon & Candied Pistachio

Toffee-Glazed Banana Financier with Candied Hazelnuts, Date Jam & Frothed Pineapple

Criollo Cake with Parsnip, Red Wine & Candied Vanilla

For our first wedding anniversary Dallas and I decided to go all out and have dinner at Charlie Trotter’s. This restaurant is pretty much where it all started in Chicago for progressive, fine dining. We have been to many high-end restaurants in Chicago where the chefs have trained under Charlie Trotter and thought we should finally check out the source. Charlie Trotter’s is on its 25th year of operation but is closing this August, so this was pretty much our last chance to go. Definitely one of the fanciest dinners I have been to. And special thanks to our friend Alden who helped us get there with his generous wedding gift/anniversary gift. Happy anniversary to us!

Paula Deen’s Vidalia Onion Honey Mustard Dressing

February 23rd, 2012 · No Comments

I don’t know why I bought this Paula Deen dressing, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that 1) it was delicoius and 2) it did not have 3,000 calories and 59 grams of fat. In fact, it was very light.
