Speaking of the allergist, I took a prescription he made for Pataday eye drops to CVS and when they rang it up, they said I owed $50. I was all “$50!??!?! WTF!??!” and they said that insurance covered $59 and I had to pay $50. Wow. For 2.5 milliliters. To put this in persepctive, there are almost 5 milliliters in a teaspoon.. so that’s like $159 for a half of a teaspoon. I don’t know if I’ll be refilling this prescription very often.
So, I just found out that my insurance doesn’t even cover Pataday any more. My doctor prescribed a new prescription eye drop called Optivar. Actually, I’m getting the generic form of it. Bad news is that it’s still a $50 copay but the good news is that the bottle is a whopping 6 milliliters.
My kids keep getting swimmer’s ear and two weeks ago I picked up a bottle of antibiotic drops for ears for $127.97.
And that was what I OWED. I about fell out of my car!
Crazy!
Ugh, I am SO bad with eyedrops, too: I always miss my eye, so I waste end up wasting drops. I don’t know why the allergy ones are so expensive! Even the over-the-counter type are pricey, and they are super hard to get during allergy season.
Everytime I miss my eye with a drop I think “Well, there goes a dollar” !!
Depressing, isn’t it?! I feel like liquid-based meds are such a rip-off in so many ways because part of it always sticks to the bottle or comes out as a mist instead of a full drop when it gets to the end. Nasal sprays are the worst because you waste some priming them, and then they don’t dispense a consistent amount each time — plus, the tube inside doesn’t even suck up all the medicine! I don’t know why I’m so cheap about it, but it just irritates me to no end.
