Clearly Clean

April 16th, 2011 · 3 Comments

When we first moved into our condo I swore I was going to get a cleaning service because everything was so nice and new and clean. I didn’t want it to get dirty! Well then other things took priority. I joined a gym, worked out with a trainer. We got engaged and then we were saving all we could for the wedding. I’m positive we’re the only ones in our building that don’t use a cleaning service. With long working hours and having active social lives, it just seems like what people do these days. But not us. Some time last fall, my trainer, who I no longer see (she left the gym and I never signed up with anyone else) told me about Clearly Clean. She said she uses them occasionally, not like every week or every other week, but just as needed. And she told me they were cheap. So, I decided to give it a try.

The girl that came was really young. Her name was Svetlana, so I’m thinking Russian or Polish. She didn’t totally speak English very well, but she knew how to clean. While she was here she must have phoned into her boss because he boss called me to tell me our place was a bigger than they can usually get done in the 3 hours we’d reserved. I guess it’s true. So I prioritized the rooms and asked Svetlana to do the best she could. Lots of things were hand scrubbed to gleaming, like the floors.. others weren’t as good as I thought, but then again, maybe if I’d gotten 4 hours….

All together 3 hours was only $55 plus tip, which I thought was really reasonable. Especially for scrubbing 2.5 bathrooms and the kitchen and everything. Our upstairs neighbors have a cleaning lady who came down and quoted us over $100 once. So, yeh.. a bargain.

We got her one other time and then this last time.. uh.. yeh.. wedding over, maybe we have the budget now? .. we got another woman named Luda. I paid for one extra hour and it made all the difference. Or else Luda was that much better. She was a bit older and spoke better English. We’d been having some communication issues with the other cleaner. Like once she accidentally turned the stove on and came running to get me. I came up and told her to press the “OFF” button but she couldn’t understand. It made me think I had to be there all the time just in case she might burn the house down. Anyway, I guess what I’m getting at is that we’ll probably request Luda back. I don’t think I’ll set up a regular schedule, but I love how you can make all your appointments on their website for whenever you want. The site is pretty craptacular, but it works! I won’t be signing up for a regular servicing, but I think I’ll keep using them… every once in a while. Totally worth the time and money.

What $38 Mac & Cheese Looks Like

$38 Mac & Cheese

Alden, Jon, Paul

Rachelle & Steve

A couple weeks ago I met up with a few of my old FeedBurner coworkers for lunch at Public House. Steve was the last of our FeedBurner founders to still be working at Google and it was his last day.

On the Public House menu (PDF) they have mac & cheese with many options. Here are all of the things you can add to your mac & cheese:

  • house smoked bacon – $1
  • pulled bbq chicken – $2
  • burnt end brisket – $2
  • chicken chili – $4
  • lobster – $9
  • caramelized onion – $1
  • wild mushroom – $2
  • roasted jalapeno – $1
  • shaved french black truffle – Market Price
  • all the above – $30

Paul was very intrigued by this. We were talking to the waitress and she said no one has ever ordered “all of the above” that she’s ever seen. Paul went for it! The base price for the mac & cheese is $8 plus “all of the above” makes this $38 mac & cheese! When it came out our server said he never saw anyone order “all of the above” before either. We started to wonder if anyone had ever ordered it. The restaurant had only been open for a few months. Was it possible?

As for the taste, everyone who wanted to had a bite. I thought it was good. I think Paul thought it was really good, but not worth almost $40. Next time I think he’ll just pick a few fillings to add and cut the price in half.

My Life in France by Julia Child

April 13th, 2011 · No Comments

finished 04.11.11.

I listened to the audio version of this book, which was a big mistake. I listen to audio books mostly at the gym and this book was like 90% about food.. which is hard to listen to while working out! Still, I thought it was a great book.

Happy Birthday, Quinn

April 12th, 2011 · 1 Comment

Last week was Quinn’s birthday and on Sunday was the celebration. He and all his friends went to The Little Gym and then after that we met up with everyone for dinner at Village Tap. It is quite remarkable how healthy and awesome Quinn is, given that four years ago he was born 15 weeks too early, weighed about a pound, had 2 holes in his heart and had barely functioning lungs and kidneys. Talk about a miracle kid! Four years later he is a perfectly healthy, smart and rambunctious little boy!

Quinn is still a huge fan of Dallas’s. Even more now, I think, because Quinn is starting to like comic book characters and Dallas always knows everything about comics. It’s about time that all those boxes of comics in our closet paid off in some way. Whenever Quinn points to a comic book character and asks Dallas who it is, Dallas always knows.

We noticed Quinn was into comics a few weeks ago when we saw him at The Piggery. In his little backpack he had sticker books of comics. He played with the book and talked to Dallas about it for so long! So, for his birthday we got him some popup comic books. One was DC Super Heroes and one was The Amazing Spider-Man Pop-Up, because Quinn especially loves Spidey.

Some of the pop ups in the DC comics book were so big and elaborate. They were way taller than Quinn when he was sitting down with the book open in front of him. And, if that’s not enough, this book even had a battery in it and the Batman spread had a lit up bat signal coming out of it! I think he liked them. I know I did! haha

As I was posting this, I realized we had a few more photo so of Quinn from the last few weeks. We hadn’t seen Quinn since New Years Eve with all of the wedding planning and wedding trip, so it was nice to hang out with him these past few weeks.

Here’s from a different night at the Village Tap. After dinner Dallas took Quinn next door and got him a chocolate ice cream cone.

As if Dallas wasn’t already Quinn’s favorite, now he was really his buddy! Of course this all looks innocent, but Dallas is always teaching Quinn such nice habits. …. like telling people they STINK! I’m sure Quinn’s preschool teachers are loving that one. Quinn doesn’t forget either. The last two times we saw him he made sure to tell me I was stinky!

Finally, one from The Piggery, where Quinn had the biggest brownie & ice cream sundae ever!
