Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell

finished 10.26.10

I listened to the audio version of this book mostly at the gym and while going for long walks at Palmer Square. Before beginning the book, all that I knew about Gone With the Wind was: Scarlett, Rhett, and “Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn.” I never read the book, I never saw the movie. I knew it was set in the past, but wasn’t sure when.

The book got great reviews on Audible but I was a little leery because it is 49+ hours long. Well.. I thought it was great! The characters were totally unlikeable. And so much of it is racist and sexist. You’d think I should have hated it. But you have to think of the time that it was written (1936) and the period it was set in (1860s – 1870s). The narrator does an awesome job with accents and the book won a Pulitzer Prize for a reason. It’s well written and sucks you in. The 49 hour commitment was no problem at all! Now I want to watch the movie!
