Max Gerber’s Abandoned Showroom

January 29th, 2010 · 4 Comments

On the corner of Milwaukee and California is Max Gerber’s showroom. This building has been closed and empty since we moved to Logan Square a little over a year ago. From what I can tell from random bits of information online, it seems to have closed in late spring or early summer of 2008. So just before we moved in. This space is big enough, I’d love to see a supermarket go in. Logan Square is desperately lacking as far as groceries go. The closest supermarkets are not walkable. I think if one went in here it would really do the neighborhood well.

Took this photo when I was at the Harold Washington Library to see Richard Russo on Writers on the Record. I was denied a library card that night because I couldn’t sufficiently prove my current residency.

Food Rules: An Eater’s Manual by Michael Pollan

January 27th, 2010 · No Comments

finished 01.22.10

Food Rules is basically the cliff notes to all of Michael Pollan‘s writing. I’ve read some of his articles and parts of his books and while I like his philosophy, I’m not a completely converted disciple. Food Rules gives you a lot of his philosophies in little bite-size chunks… in little sentences that are easy to remember in your day-to-day. Don’t eat anything your grandmother wouldn’t recognize as food. The whiter the bread the sooner you’ll be dead. Eat when you are hungry, not when you are bored. Eat only foods that will eventually rot. Etc. This book can be read in one sitting..but I think I’ll keep it around and just skim over it again over time.

Happy Hour at Bull & Bear

January 26th, 2010 · No Comments

On Friday night a bunch of people from my team went out for happy hour at Bull & Bear, a bar around the corner from our office. Aimee, who is officially the PM of HH, called ahead to reserve a tap table for us. I’ve been to Bull & Bear before, but only to the bar area. This table area was new. Here’s how it works:

Each table has two beer taps, one Bud Light and one something else. Ours was Bud Light and Stella. Some of the other tables had different kinds of Goose Island beers. The waitress gets you glasses and starts the meter and then you are free to help yourself to all the beer you want. There’s a computer with a screen that displays how many ounces of each beer that you have poured. It’s a pretty cool concept. Dangerous. We had so many people we were kind of all mingling in front of the table and the table was serving as our own private bar. I can imagine people sitting at the table and just drinking glass after glass without even the delay of wait staff going to get your drinks. Also, we wondered how many people had gotten totally bombed and put their mouths under the taps! I’m sure there’s the obvious reason for this, but just seeing how many ounces you’ve poured without a dollar amount attached is pretty useless. 72 ounces? No idea how much that bill is.

After just about everyone left I somehow thought it was a good idea to go with Ryan and Doug to O’Leary’s Public House. I grabbed some grub and had one more beer. It was a nice surprise to see a Green Bay Packers flag hanging in there!

Cafe 103

Grilled Barramundi with Tomato-Thyme Sauce, Roasted Garlic Polenta ,
Roasted Red Pepper and Braised Leeks

Last Thursday night I went to dinner at Cafe 103 with Erin and Cinnamon. The restaurant is named after the street it’s on, 103rd Street. Gasp! Just kidding. But I rarely get down to the south side of Chicago so it’s always and adventure.

Erin and Scott bought a bungelow down in Beverly a few months back, so Cinnamon and I went to check out her new neighborhood. Beverly is about as far south as you can get and still be in the city limits. I’ve only been down there once before, with Erin and Chuck, and it was years ago. You know, the south side gets a really bad rap by northsiders. Many times and in many areas, it’s for good reason, but we should all try to visit the good spots more. From what I’ve been able to tell Beverly is a perfectly nice, quaint little community that’s really cultured (Beverly Arts Center, anyone?) and has some great independent bars, restaurants, and stores. I’m looking forward to checking it out more now that we have friends there.

Cafe 103 was a great restaurant. No one rushed us, and you know how Erin, Cinnamon and I sit and talk and close down a restaurant every time. The food was delicious. We shared scallop and shrimp appetizers. For dinner I had grilled barramundi, Cinnamon had a mushroom and parmesan ravioli and Erin had a grilled pork chop. Cafe 103 is BYO and of course we stormed through two bottles of wine like it was nobody’s business. Cinnamon was driving and didn’t drink much, so that makes the math even worse! :) Had a great time catching up. Hoping we’re now back on track with our monthly dinners. It had been something like 9 months since our last one!
