Grizzly Bear, House of Blues, River North, Chicago
Jess won some tickets to see a taping of Sound Opinions with Grizzly Bear at the House of Blues and invited me to come along. Justin is a big fan of Grizzly Bear and had given me some of their music a while back, but I didn’t really get into it. I am a big fan of Sound Opinions, though, so I was excited to go. Jess told me that she had one of the Grizzly Bear albums and didn’t really get into it, but when she saw them live at Lollapalooza, she really enjoyed the performance, so I had hope. Turns out, she was right. These guys just look like regular hipsters from Brooklyn, but when they open their mouths to sing it was like angels – beautiful voices with lots of harmonizing.
The format of this show was very much like when I saw the Death Cab for Cutie Sound Opinions show except this time was much shorter. The band was late and I think it was a bit of a rush to get the questions and songs in. And Grizzly Bear only sang 3 songs. But there were only about 30 people in the audience.. so basically, Grizzly Bear did a private show for a super small crowd. I’m looking forward to revisiting some of their music now.
Amazing that you got to see this, but yeah, more than 3 songs would have been nice.
Yeh, thought it was something you would have liked..

Very, very jealous. To Jess’ point about their music, it definitely isn’t something that clicks on your first listen, but grows and grows on you.
I’m really liking this song called Foreground. It’s one they played yesterday.. and was pretty impressive live. I think they may have been singing it when I took the photo above. All the guys harmonizing their voices was awesome.
