posters

Found all this stuff when we were moving. As a teenager I had tons of posters all over my bedroom.

Few things to note:

  • The posters are almost equal parts of Teen Beat, Metal Edge, & cute baby animals.
  • There are lots of posters of the Coreys – Haim and Feldman. It is clear that I liked Corey Haim more.
  • There is a lot of Menudo, GNR, Def Leppard.
  • Neal Patrick Harris is looking about 10 years old (or maybe I’m just old now).
  • I loved River Phoenix.
  • There are only a few New Kids on the Block posters and there are many, many more heavy metal posters and glam rock (?) posters like White Snake, Poison, Bon Jovi, Motley Crue.
  • I have Skid Row posters and really was into Sebastian Bach. I even named one of our cats Sebastian.
  • There are posters of people I do not remember or recognize at all like Ty Miller? And Andre Gower? Chris Young anyone? Enuff Z’Nuff? Obvs their careers went nowhere.
  • Teen stars looked like babies next to the heavy metal guys.
  • I had packaging of brands I liked.. Exclamation perfume, A&W root beer. I’d hang this on the wall next to my favorite bands and actors. It occurs to me that this was kind of an old school proclamation of everything I supported.. like you do now on Facebook and MySpace.. but pre-internet. It was my Facebook wall… but it was a literal wall.

I also drew and doodled a lot and would make little posters of things I liked.

To incorporate all of this, my cousin Dawn and I made these notebooks where we’d write down lyrics and cut out pictures and paste them in. Kind of like scrapbooking before it was trendy?

So I’m thrilled to see a little picture of Ryan Lambert in your book…lol I thought I as the only one who knew who he was! Also, you mention an Andre Gower….I believe if it’s who I’m thinking of who co-starred next to Ryan Lambert in the movie “The Monster Squad”.

Um, this is the most hilarious thing I’ve seen all morning. And that’s saying something, actually.

  • RachelleB

@Sarah & CC – glad you got a good laugh!

@Joel. srsly. I don’t know what is up with the Danza.

@Rhonda. I just had to look up who Ryan Lambert was. I guess he was on Kids Incorporated with Fergie and them too? Martika.. Anyway, I’m digging his tight-rolled jeans in that photo!

Holy crap, I totally owned some Exclamation perfume! Most of my walls, however, were plastered with photos of Kirk Cameron from BOP magazine, plus a signed B&W photo that I received as a member of his fan club.

  • Richard K. Liu

I love your band name doodles and the random Nicole Eggert pic in your “scrap books”.

I wish I still had trapper folders and 3 ring binders with all of my drawings of metal bands names and logos…

    OMG so cute!
Johnny Depp, still hot in 80′s photos

It is also funny that I’ve been looking at my niece’s Amazon wishlist. She will be 13 SOON. She has all sorts of Jonas Brothers posters on her list and someone named Jesse McCartney (I think) and Tokio something. AND subscriptions to magazines like Pop Star all these weird Teen Beat type things. I guess it just keeps happening over and over generation to generation!

Corey Haim was totally cuter than Feldman!

I used to have a huge chalkboard where I would draw “murals” in my room. these usually consisted of logos, giant swatch watches, etc. kids are so easily swayed by advertising!

  • Christian

This post back so many memories…Hahaha…thank you!

  • Aunt Susie

Wow Shell…cool chronicle… amazing what the internet has done…I hope you save all that stuff. Especially “The First”…

  • stacy

That is awesome that you saved that. Man, i remember have Kirk Cameron posters too! Too funny!

  • Rhonda

Yep Ryan was on Kids Inc. I happen to have some of Martika’s cassette tapes from back in the day. I hate to admit this but if I dug back in my video tapes I have I betcha I could still find some Kids Inc. recorded on VHS…lol I might just have to do that on some boring Friday night… ha!!

I had Exclamation (although I think it was more for its rockin’ bottle than the smell), but said smell gave my mom a headache and I was banned from wearing it. Ditto for Jean Nate’

No biggie though. I just sprayed on a little of Debbie Gibson’s “Electric Youth” (which had an equally rockin’ bottle) and all was well.

    Wow. I am officially old.

  • TingTingMANIAC#1
