This weekend we went to Wisconsin for my dad’s 60th birthday party. It was nice to visit at my parent’s house and to see many people that I hadn’t seen for so long. Aunts and uncles and cousins, old neighbors from where we grew up, lots of family friends and newer friends that my parents have made. I made four kinds of cookies for the party (more on that later) and took many photos that I will link to when I get through them. I’ve been extra crazy busy lately even with yesterday off. For now, here’s a family photo of us. Jess is the only one not looking at the camera and smiling, but it still captures her perfectly at this point in her life!

Here’s the rest of the photos. Some are mine and some are photos Sue took:

The Rough Guide to the Internet 1999

I found this copy of The Rough Guide to the Internet 1999 when we were moving. I kept it because I think it’s so funny. Back in 1999 there was a book published that listed a bunch of good web sites? Seems so backwards now.

Things I Learned About My Dad (In Therapy) by Heather B. Armstrong

February 11th, 2009 · 2 Comments

finished 02.11.09

This is a book of essays about fathers compiled and edited by Heather Armstrong (Dooce). Some stories are about being a father, some are about the writers’ fathers. All of the authors are bloggers and some people have had issue with this. That many of these stories were already mostly written on the web somewhere. I didn’t have an issue and I enjoyed the book. I read Dooce daily, but none of the other writer’s sites, so most of this was new to me. Even the essay by Jon, Heather’s husband, was new to me. Or maybe I just have a bias because I’ve met Heather when we sat on a panel together at BlogHer 2006. I also saw her speak on a few panels at SXSW last year – Content Boundaries, a 12-Step Program & Online Adulation. Or it could be that my dad’s 60th birthday is tomorrow and I’ve been thinking about him a lot in planning his party. Some of the stories are funny, some insightful, some sentimental, some all three. In any case, I think if you are a father or you have a father (or father figure) you will probably enjoy this book.

The Best Valentines Day Gift Ever

February 10th, 2009 · 9 Comments

snuggieFor an early Valentines Day gift Dallas got me a Snuggie. It’s the best. As you can see, I can read a book (with the free book light that came with the Snuggie) and use the remote without my arms getting cold or being tucked under the blanket!

All joking aside, it really is very warm and cozy. Plus it’s fun to say Snuggie. I will ignore the blue fuzzies that are gathering on my clothes and furniture and how difficult it is to walk on the stairs and the fact that it smells slightly plastic-y. The Snuggie is awesome. It has occurred to me, though, that I’ve been wearing the Snuggie backwards a lot and then essentially I’m just wearing a robe. .. but where can you get a nice, oversized, fuzzy robe like this for only $14.99? And did I mention the free book light that was included?

This all came about from watching the “As Seen on TV commercials on the Sleuth Channel where we watch Magnum P.I. reruns all the time. And one night about a week ago I was downstairs in bed reading. It was freezing. I keep the heat down to save money. Instead of continuing to read I just bundled under the covers and rolled over to go to sleep, saying I was too cold. Dallas was all “You need the Snuggie to keep your arms warm.” Here I am now typing this while wearing the Snuggie.
