I hadn’t seen Cinnamon since September, so she and I met up on Sunday at Vella Cafe under the Western Blue Line stop. I’d been there one time before, but it was about a year ago. Happy to say the food was delicious and I really like the space. Not only is it conveniently located one train stop from my house, but it’s nice and open and bright inside. So bright that I felt like wearing sunglasses in my seat for a while and my photo is all harsh light. I had the sausage frittata panino with caramelized onions, ajvar mayo, butterkase cheese and smashers on the side. Cinnamon had a ham crepe that she was happy to report tasted as good as I thought it looked.

I was still getting over a bad cold and though I felt better, I was losing my voice. Cinnamon and I had a lot of catching up to do so by the end I was sounding pretty bad. Whatever. Worth it! Hopefully Cinnamon and I can get back on track and meet up monthly again.. and hopefully we can convince Erin to come back out with us next time.

On another note, it seems like I will go months without going out for brunch and then I’ll find myself brunching every day of a weekend. This weekend I also went with Dallas and Kristin for brunch at Flo on Saturday. I don’t know why I’d never been to Flo before – it’s not far from where I lived in East Ukrainian Village. I wasn’t in love with my food (breakfast burrito – onions, tomatoes, veggies were all raw inside and the cheese wasn’t melted) but Dallas and Kristin loved what they got. Dallas got the smoked turkey hash with potato, onion, green pepper, squash and smokey chipotle crema, grilled and topped with two poached eggs, served with fresh fruit and wheat toast. Kristin got brioche toast with grilled smoked turkey, and fresh spinach, topped w/ two poached eggs, hollandaise sauce and asiago cheese. I definitely was in love with the latte I ordered. Perfect amount of foam and soo tasty. And it felt great on my sore throat. I definitely do want to go back to Flo and try what Kristin ordered.

I thought it was strange that in the same Peapod order some of my bananas were from Guatemala and some were from Honduras.

Killian & Liz on the Food Network

After Killian and Liz’s wedding in June, they honeymooned on Maui and Oahu. When they got back to Chicago Killian told me that they met Rachael Ray. She was at Rum Fire, a restaurant at the Sheraton Waikiki, and was filming a show. I didn’t realize that they were actually filmed for the show.

Tonight Dallas and I were watching Juno on HBO. It was the second time we saw the movie and at the end I could barely restrain Dallas from grabbing the remote and changing the channel. It’s not his fault, though. He has some disease where he has to hold the remote and he has to flip the channels all the time. This time it actually was a good thing when he flipped it to Food Network. We caught the end of a show called Rachael’s Vacation and it was an episode featuring the Rum Fire. Not only can you see Killian and Liz sitting at a table behind Rachael and her husband, but Liz also had a small clip where she described the ambiance of the restaurant. Killian and Liz missed the show tonight so this post is for them.

Side Note 1: How disturbing is Rachael Ray’s cleavage in this clip? Her wardrobe stylist should be fired.
Side Note 2: I drank a lot of pina coladas at the Sheraton Waikiki pool in 2007.

“Dibs” is when a person who shovels a parking spot on a public street gets to put some random junk in that spot when their car is not there and then no one else can park there. I don’t know if it’s legal or not, but Daley is on record defending it as a Chicago tradition.

When I lived in Roscoe Village I rarely saw people marking dibs. Probably because a lot of people have garages there. >When I was in the East Ukrainian Village neighborhood I saw dibs more. But, never have I seen it as much as I did this week in Logan Square. The dibs photos above were all taken on the same block in Logan Square. And I only walked down half of the block.

More information on dibs.
