The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter by Carson McCullers

I had this book for years before I read it. I don’t know why, but the cover kind of put me off. I think my mom gave me the book originally, I don’t know if she read it or not. Anyway, i really enjoyed the book. It takes places decades ago in the south. Each of the characters is struggling in their own way. They interact but each has a unique point of view and story. Each character also has loneliness in common. Good read. Classic book.

Lunch With Greg

I was supposed to meet up with Greg for lunch last week but I was having a hectic time at work and was sick. I rescheduled about 3 times and ended up bumping it to the next week. Luckily, it worked out. If I thought I hadn’t seen Cinnamon for a while, I realized this week that I hadn’t seen Greg since May!

We planned to meet at A Mano. I arrived a little early so I was just waiting outside taking a few photos. Then I walked up to the door. Maybe you’re more observant than me and see those signs on the door, but it wasn’t until I was trying to push the locked door that I realized they were closed. The signs say, “A Mano is temporarily closed due to a burst water pipe and severe floor damage that is currently under repair. We hope to reopen as early as Monday 2/3/09. We apologize for any inconvenience.”

Hm. So, we didn’t know where to go and just went to Keefer’s which was really closeby. Probably would have just gone to Harry Caray’s but we’d already lunched there one time before. Keefer’s was good. More expensive than I’d expected, but whatever.. I only get to this guy very rarely. As we were leaving we said the same predictable thing we always say: “We need to get together more often.” And then we laughed and I said “See you in 6 months!” Hopefully it isn’t that long!

Twilight by Stephenie Meyer

Tastes like candy! That’s how I’d sum up this book. My 12-year-old niece was reading the series over the summer when she visited us. Dallas’ sister was reading it when she was visiting over Labor Day weekend. And then everyone you knew was reading it and they made a movie. The reading is easy (it’s for tweens, I think) and there are a lot of cliff-hanging chapters. It’s a vampire love story. It takes place in Forks, WA, a place I visited with Kelly and Jeff. What more to say? I whipped through it at lightening pace and will hopefully be getting the next book in the series from my niece if she can part with it. She’s on the 3rd book already.

I took this photo on Monday night. The temperature was about 40 degrees warmer than it was last Friday morning. Still, that’s not saying much. Look how much ice has formed on the Chicago River.
