I enjoyed The Water is Wide a lot. It’s an autobiography and is based on Pat Conroy’s work as a teacher on a poor, run-down island off of South Carolina. Most people on the island are illiterate, sheltered descendants of slaves who have very little contact with the US mainland. It tells of his struggle to reach his students and his battle with the school’s principle and administrators. Probably the best Pat Conroy book I’ve read (I’ve also read The Great Santini and The Prince of Tides).

The Water Is Wide by James Taylor.
Listen to it. It’s my all time favorite song.

Lords of Discipline is another good work by Conroy (the movie version is not bad either).

ohh. James Taylor. I like him. My old coworkers and I used to always call him The OG JT because he was JT before JT was JT.
