In the wintertime when it’s cold I love to make a pot of chili and let it cook all day. Just as much as Dallas and I like to make chili, a comfort food from my childhood, we also love to make Japanese curry stew, a comfort food from his childhood. It’s just as much a perfect winter comfort food a chili is.
Basically, you just need to buy the curry, which is available in the “ethnic” section of any supermarket, and follow the instructions on the back. We get beef and cut it up, or just buy beef stew meat, carrots, potatoes and maybe some onions.
Adam Kuban wrote a great piece on Japanese curry for Serious Eats. Oh, and remember these photos of the Japanese curry we had in Honolulu?
You gotta be kidding. I made curry last night too! The girlfriend and I will be eating the leftovers all week. When I was a kid my mom would take the cold leftover curry and make sandwiches with it.
hey, george – on a sandwich? i’ll have to try that.
we actually made this curry a few weeks ago, i just got around to posting it now.
Curry sammiches. We just used plain ‘ol white bread. It’s kind of nice in the summer because you have to have the curry cold to stay on the bread. My mom also would make croquettes using panko as well. Leftover curry is so versatile.
..funny about your first chili link above I love to … I clicked it and it mentions your dad was at Hillshire Farm for 25 years… well, he’s now just passed 30 years. for a service award he chose a digital camera and photo printer.
That’s a L-O-N-G time to work for one place!
I couldn’t find this yesterday at Whole Foods….where else can I find this?
@George – curry croquettes sound good, but I’m still not sure about a cold curry sandwich!
@mom – that is a LONG time.
@Ray – try Jewel. I’m pretty sure they have it there.. in the “ethnic” aisle.
