On Saturday night we went out to celebrate Kristin’s birthday. We started at Frasca Pizzeria and Wine Bar where we had many glasses of wine and beer while enjoying olives, different kinds bruchetta, and fancy pizzas. We also had cake that someone brought. The cake had these ginormous mounds of frosting on them that were supposed to be balloons, but that everyone referred to as “the gonads.” They made the frosting part of the cake the tallest. Aside from the dining areas, Frasca also has a really large bar area and we stayed there enjoying ports and other drinks until they closed.

After Frasca we went to Cody’s Public House, a really cool neighborhood bar. A lot of people played pool and darts. I’d never heard of the place before but I really liked it. It’s a lot bigger inside than it looks outside, it’s dog friendly (I saw two dogs inside), really casual, there are many dart boards, and I heard that in the summer there’s a really great garden area with cornhole and bocce ball.

Fiesta Mexicana, Lincoln Park, Chicago

Red Snapper at Fiesta Mexicana, Lincoln Park, Chicago
On Friday night a bunch of different people met up at our favorite downtown dive bar, Rossi, for a few drinks. Afterwards, PaulBaker and Kate took Dallas and I to Fiesta Mexicana for dinner. It’s a fun place. Lots of people. Dallas got the whole red snapper to see how it compared to the one he loves at El Barco. It was a lot smaller and lot bonier, but he said the flavor was really good. A group of girls behind us dressed in mini skirts (?) were out for a birthday. There was a little 2-man mariachi band and all the girls were dancing. At the end of dinner our server brought out some complimentary Kahlua and cream shots for us. Fun time.

Google Engineering Week Volunteers, River North, Chicago
On Thursday Google celebrated Engineering Week in all of our offices by inviting school kids to visit for the day. In Chicago we hosted 4th – 7th graders from a school on the South Side. The kids selected were part of a group who is interested in computers and the internet. I’m not sure if it was a class or an after school club or what, but they were kids who some day may choose a career in IT or engineering or some sort of tech industry. We taught the kids about Google and our history, did some techy learning activities, toured the office, took them to lunch in our cafeteria and talked to them about careers in engineering.
I only volunteered to be a lunch buddy and take some of the kids to lunch, but I was having so much fun I ended up volunteering and photographing most of the day. I took many, many photos but they’re for internal use and to send to the kids and I don’t feel comfortable posting them online, so here’s a photo of me with some of the other volunteers that day.
