My friend Erin lives about a 5 minute walk from my apartment and we still never see each other. I hadn’t seen her since December, I realize, and it’s March tomorrow. Not acceptable!

A few weeks (a month?) ago we decided we must get together for dinner and literally we had to plan it on the calender..and then? we had to reschedule. We decided to go to dinner at Volo, a restaurant in our beloved neighborhood of Roscoe Village. I have actually only been there one time before when Jess and Jeannette were visiting and I was super eager to go back.

Loved it. I had a great time. I had the aromatic white wine flight even though I’d not planned on having anything to drink. We decided that we couldn’t go to a wine bar and not get wine. Plus, I’d had a sort of stressful day at work. We shared a plate of six artisan cheeses, which were so delicious. We also decided to share the BMG pizza, because it was so great the last time I was at Volo, and really? Can you ever have enough goat cheese? Also, we got the marrow bones. … because.. what the hell! Have you ever had marrow bones? Us either, til now! Honestly, I wasn’t a huge fan. They were alright, but pretty greasy and rich. I was glad to try them and our waitress complimented us on being so brave, but I don’t think I’d get it again.

It was fun to catch up with Erin. I turns out we’re in some very similar places in regard to “big life things” so it was good to talk to someone in the same spot. Next time, I will not let 3 months pass before we have a big catch up. Seriously, I loved the cheese plate so much I feel like we should just have a standing cheese date at Volo!

Here are Erin’s photos from our dinner. We are both always photographing our food. I realized last night that the tables at Volo are very close and we were both photographing our food from each side of the table. It must have looked funny. So funny that the trixies next to us asked us if we were “like reviewers or something.” Reminds me of a funny story from my cookie party in December. I was in the kitchen and Dallas’ aunt came in and said “do those girls in the living room work with you?” I said no. She said “oh! they are all taking photos of the food instead of the people at the party. Just like you do!” I don’t think she quite gets that my food photos at family parties aren’t for work, but it was funny anyway. :)

Currently Obsessed With Zuma

I played a trial of the full-version of Zuma at PlayFirst months ago.. and now I’m playing it again. You can play Zuma online for free, or download the full version (free trial, then $20). Basically, all you do is shoot a ball from the frogs mouth and match up colors of balls before they advance to the skeleton’s mouth.. but it’s really addictive.

Dallas took me out for a fancy schmancy dinner at China Grill. I read online that the food was great, with generous proportions, but I was still skeptical. I shouldn’t have been. The food was both really delicious and really big. We ordered an appetizer, two entrees and two sides and ended up taking most of the two sides home with us. Dallas and I really enjoyed all of the food we ordered. In particular, the short ribs were marinated for 24 hours and the ribeye for 48 and both were so very tender. You could easily cut them with a fork. The cod was really flavorful. The mashed potatoes were loaded with caviar and lobster. The fried rice was probably my least favorite of the meal, but it was still pretty good.

I had arrived at the bar before Dallas and had a drink in the China Grill bar. While sitting and waiting I began talking with one of the waiters when he came to the bar area to get drinks for his tables in the dining room. This waiter ended up being our waiter later on, which was cool. He was really nice and pretty attentive. I wasn’t in love with China Grill’s night-clubby atmosphere, club music for sure, but the food made up for it. Also, it was really expensive. If I was to spend the money again I’d probably try another place. Still, it was fun to dress nice and drink martinis and have a date night for a change.

Callie

Callie
Callie, New London, WI

Back when I was a teenager we had a cat that gave birth to a litter of kittens and then got really sick. Her kidneys failed and we had to make a decision of whether to try to save her or have her put down. It was an especially hard decision knowing that she had a whole litter of kittens to take care of, but in the end it didn’t look good and euthanasia seemed like the best option.

Callie Moving to WaupacaTo care for the kittens we had to buy formula and tiny bottles. My brother and I set our alarm clocks for every few hours and took turns feeding each of them for weeks. Until they were old enough to eat watered down food and then real food. When the kittens were big enough we gave them away, but kept one calico kitten for ourselves. Appropriately, we named her Callie.

Callie lived with my parents for the past 17 years. Over the weekend my parents had realized they hadn’t seen her for a while, which isn’t that odd. She had a warmly insulated house outside where she lived and my parents’ house is on a large plot of land with a woods and a pond and lots of hiding places. Callie and their other cat Bailey have the run of the land, as does the dog, Dakoda. They all spend a lot of time both inside and outside.

I just found out this morning that when my dad found Callie on Sunday it looked as though she was soundly sleeping in her cat house, like normal, except that she had actually passed on to kitty heaven sometime in her sleep. I’m saddened because we had her around for so long, but I know that she had a long, long life. Almost 20 years old! Still, when my mom sent these photos of her and our dog Max who passed on a couple years ago, they brought a tear to my eye. Callie was kind of a major grouch and a loner, so I didn’t think I’d miss her really, but when I think about how long she was in our family… I think there’s also a special bond because we had to be adopted mother to her when her own kitty mom died when she was a few days old.

RIP Callie & Max. At least they are back together now.
