Load Up On Iron

December 10th, 2007 · 4 Comments

The last time, and only time, I tried to give blood was about 8 years ago. We were having a blood drive where I worked in Wisconsin, but I was denied. They did a small test and said that while I had enough iron in my blood for myself, I didn’t have enough to donate blood.

Next Monday we’re having a blood drive here at Google. I signed up to see if I could give blood this time.. if I have enough iron in my system. I just saw our lunch menu this week and every day there is a “High in Iron” food entree that I should probably eat to make sure I have enough iron for Monday.. except that it’s stuff like liver & onions, sardines & anchovies, liver sausage, liver pate, and rosemary roast goose. And I’ll be in our Mountain View office for half the week. Looks like maybe I should just pop a few iron pills?

Your last blog entry made me think about donating too. I am pretty sure my blood type is O+ but I’m not 100% sure. Anyways… I went about googling the information you would need to have to know before donating and the questions they would ask. I dont know if it’s the same in the United States as it is in Canada but I found this site: http://www.blood.ca hopefully its of use to you. Make sure to get lots of sleep and not be sick before donating. Those are the main things assuming you aren’t a druggy that has AIDS. Which, lets face it, I would REALLY doubt.

Let me know how it turned out… make sure to bring O.J. to drink afterwards (although they provide juice its always good to have lots on hand)

i think if you just take a multivitamin and eat some steak, you’ll be fine.

I give blood every 8 weeks with a couple of guys from work. My hematocirt level has always been fine.
