I had to take some photographs of shadows for an assignment. I took these two photos on Roscoe Street, printed them and turned them in for critique. What do you think?

You truly are remarkable Shell. You see things others do not see, and have the ability to capture it, and then show us what we’ve missed. Beautiful.

Hi Rachelle — distinct theme (if only two things can HAVE a theme) to your shadows submittal — linear, parallel, ordered, organized, structure, etc. I think you get the drift, no? NOT a negative thing by any stretch…just the observations of a fellow photo-geek (was big into the whole B&W thing, and reading your blog has me interested in the studio from where you are taking lessons). My thoughts on shadows, as are my thoughts on clouds, when I was capturing images for my shadows assignment, I liked to look for “mirrored” things, or shadows that came from an object that looked like that object but formed something more abstract and surreal, or shadows from objects that created an image of something completely different.
Love this blog…love your work…will keep reading religiously. Cheers!

Well, I’ve never taken a photography class, so my opinions should be appropriately weighted, but I do really like the photo on the left. Gorgeously golden afternoon light softens the edges of the shadow. The photo on the right, not so much.

Rachel,
Here’s a critique, for whatever it is worth:
Both pics are nice from an exposure perspective, but I can’t figure out what the subject is.
I think you could have used the shadow lines to lead somewhere — a subject or something of that sort. Besides, the trees in the pic are distracting. I would have just pictured the shadows that led to the gate.
In the second one, you could have cropped to show two shadow lines and the lighted step in between with the colored leaves.
BTW, What class are you taking at the CPC? I am planning to take the lighting 1. If you have taken it already, any feedback? Thanks!

Thanks for the feedback. When we present in class we do it in small groups and each person has to say 1. The first thing they notice in the photo, 2. What they like best about the photo, 3. What they like least about the photo, 4. If they were to reshoot the photo what they’d do differently.
Right now I’m in the Chicago Photography Center’s Photo II class. I took Photo I right before this. I don’t know if I’ll go on to Photo III. I might need a break. Especially since it will be during the holidays and it does take quite a bit to move my schedule around one night of class and another few hours of lab hours each week.
Overall I think my photography is improving and I’m finally “getting” stuff. Previous to the classes I’d read something online or books on exposure or whatever and think “oh, I get it.” Then a week later I’d not remember anything. The formality of sitting in class and doing assignments really made things stick for me. I think I’m more confident in certain situations… others are new to me and I’m still very green… Like taking people out to do portraits. I’m glad to be exposed to this by being forced to do it for assignments, but I still have a long way to go.
