Home to Storms

Airplane Wing at Sunset

Last night I had the 5pm flight out of SFO to ORD. It was delayed by about an hour and a half, but I wasn’t really complaining because I’d heard some horror stories about how people were delayed over the last day or so because of the storms in Chicago. I had the window shade closed for most of the trip because I was trying to sleep, but at one point I opened it and what I saw is in the photo above. I finally got home at about 1am.

Today on my bike ride to class and back I saw a lot of what’s in the photo below. Luckily there’s no damage to my apartment.

Finally Seeing Friends in San Francisco

August 24th, 2007 · 2 Comments

San Francisco City Hall
San Francisco City Hall, San Francisco

I’ve been in San Francisco and Mountain View since yesterday for work. Last night, I was lucky enough to meet up with Susan and Allison, who I haven’t seen since they moved to San Francisco. Other times I’ve been out here for work I’ve either been to busy with work stuff, or had not been staying near San Francisco, or it just didn’t work out. Trent was at a conference in San Jose and also came up to San Francisco and went out with us.

After some confusion with Susan and I going to a restaurant only to find out that Trent and Allison were in a different neighborhood and already had eaten, we ended up having drinks and dinner at Enrico’s in North Beach. The food was really good – we had goat cheese-stuffed mushrooms, oysters, and a fig and Gorgonzola pizza – but the service was crap. We repeatedly had to ask for a waiter, then for the stuff we ordered and then, in the end, for our check. Still it was fun to hang out outside and to see Allison and Susan again. Just like old times in Hawaii!

A few more photos from the quick trip are here.

Buh-Bye New York State Drivers License

August 22nd, 2007 · 14 Comments

Today I went to the DMV office in the Thompson Center and got my Illinois license. I was kind of freaked out by the written test and I studied online just to make sure. Still, I was nervous yesterday morning. No need, I guess, because I only got one wrong on the exam. Something about what to do when your car is skidding out of control. Gently brake and steer straight, steer into it, or jam on the brakes hard and fast. Well, I knew it wasn’t the last option.

I think I was just anxious because when I got my California Drivers License I failed the written test. Then I went back and took it again and failed. I had one more than allowed wrong. I remember that I sweet talked the DMV worker into asking me one of the wrong questions and I got it right so they let me pass through. And that was when I actually drove a car every day. These days I drive about 3 times/year. The laws in CA are weird, though. Who knows what a blue curb means? Me either. In New York, I don’t think I ever had to take a written test.

The best part is that my photo on my IL license is really cute. When does that ever happen? I’ll have to show it to you next time I see you.

Singha

Singha
Singha, River North, Chicago

At FeedBurner we used to order Singha whenever there were meetings in the office or there was a special occasion, but I’d never been inside the restaurant until we moved to Google. Now our office is so close we can see Singha out the window. You can’t really tell from these photos, but there are platforms with holes in the center where the table comes out. Then you sit on the platform and put your legs in the hole. Pretty cool. And the food was as good as ever.
