Google Chicago Engineering

Google Chicago Engineering

This week we moved into the Google Chicago office. They had to build out some new space both for us and because they were growing so rapidly. So we’re located on a brand new floor. Today there was a ribbon cutting ceremony and media event. I don’t know exactly what happened except that there were a lot of office tours that went by. Everyone also got these Google Chicago shirts. Well, not this one exactly. Unlike New York and Mountain View where there are tons of employees in the engineering group, the office in Chicago is mostly all sales and business types. Before FeedBurner showed up there were only a few engineers. So, now that we’ve increased the size of the department and since there’s a big initiative to hire more engineers*, we got our own Chicago Eng t-shirts. Woot! Everyone not in Eng got a green version of the shirt that just says “Chicago,” not “Chicago Engineering”.

I’m happy to finally have a home after a few weeks on the road in the Bay Area and New York. It’s nice to have a desk and a chair and know where I’m going to be every day.

*If you’re interested in getting a job here, let me know. We have a referral program (wink, wink).

Flowers!

Flowers
Roscoe Village, Chicago

Last month I went to Home Depot with Jen and bought everything I needed to plant some flowers in railing planters on our deck. When I came home from a couple weeks on the road a lot of them were dried up from lack of water (Dallas has also been traveling almost every week for business), but I think with some good trimming and a lot of watering, they’re on the mend. At least I hope. It makes me happy to walk outside and see flowers.

10Pin Socks

10Pin Hot Cookies & Shot of Milk

Last night we had an engineering event at 10Pin. Our new office is really close by so it’s really convenient now. I forgot to bring socks and I was wearing sandals, so I had to buy these 10Pin socks. They’re kind of cool, though. It’s nice that they have them available for purchase. Here’s another tip. The hot-out-of-the-oven chocolate chip cookies with a shot of cold milk is the best dessert ever. Ever!

I bowled a 62 and an 80. The third game got cut off, but had 76 in the 9th frame. Not too bad, for me. Not as good as last time we were at 10Pin and I got a 95 one game, but not as bad as when we were in New York and I let off on frame 8 or 9 with a score of 16. Yes. One six!

Coney Island Cyclone

Coney Island Cyclone

Coney Island Cyclone

This was the first time I rode the Cyclone at Coney Island. It was one of the scariest roller coasters I’ve been on, I think. Just because it’s been a while since I’ve been on one and also because the coaster is SO old. It was built in 1927 and is super jolting and crickety. Jeannette & Yvan were in the first car, right in front of me, and Jess decided not to ride. So I was in my own seat, which I don’t recommend. I was getting tossed from side to side like crazy and had bruises to show for it.

Here are Yvan’s photos.

Astroland at Coney Island

Astroland At Coney Island

Astroland At Coney Island

Astroland is a an amusement park at Coney Island that has all sorts of rides and games that you’d find at a traveling fair, except that they’re permanent. Sort of. The park has been sold to developers and it’s unclear what’s going to happen, but it seems there will be some housing and stuff built and that the rides will be sold off. I think this year or next year will be the last year for Astroland, so it was nice to see it before then.

Here are Yvan’s photos.

These photos were taken with my Rebel XTi and Yvan’s Canon EFS 17-85 lens.
