Genki Sushi, Lihue, Kaua’i
Dallas and I went to Lihue to Kukui Grove Center, the largest shopping center on Kaua’i, not that it’s really that big. We looked around Macy’s but didn’t get anything, we each got some things at Déjà Vu surf shop (I got a Billabong handbag and this cute Paul Frank tshirt), and then Dallas got some University of Hawaii caps at Lids. For lunch
we went to Genki Sushi. I love that place. It’s not the best sushi ever, but it’s so much fun. Dallas took me there last time we were in Kaua’i and I liked it so much, we had to go back.
Basically, the sushi chef stands in the middle and puts things a conveyer belt that runs around the restaurant. You take what you want off the belt and eat it. At the end the waitress adds up how much you owe based on color coded plates.
After lunch we went to Borders and ran into Dallas’ brother, Jordan, who was also out shopping. I wanted to pick up a few books by local press that wouldn’t be available on Amazon or in Chicago. I also wanted to pick up some local tunes. I asked Jordan for advice on some contemporary Hawaiian music and he showed me what to get, but told me the CDs were cheaper at Costco, so we went over there and bought them.
That’s popular in Japan–it’s called “kurukuru sushi” cuz it goes round and round
I saw a similar type place in one of the shots for the show “Real Housewives of Orange County”…so there must be something like it stateside, too.
