Roscoe Village, Chicago
The only thing that’s been keeping me going through these cold, snowy days is thoughts of our Hawaiian vacation, which is less than a month away now. I even downloaded tropical photos I took on past vacations onto my new Nano (got it when Jeannette and Jessica were in town) so I can call them up on the cold walk to work.
Anybody want to recommend some good beach/long flight reading? Doesn’t have to be trashy, throw-away, vacation-y, girly novels. Just something good. I need a few new books.

Here are 2 suggestions from my new favorite writer, Michael Perry — From Wisconsin! You’ll appreciate it. A man’s point of view, but stories that make you laugh, cry, and want more more more! Easy beach reading.

I’m a big John Krakauer fan — did you ever read “Into Thin Air” ? That one is fantastic.

Nature Girl or Skinny Dip by Carl Hiassen are both easy and enjoyable reads (based in Florida, but still…)

I read Moby Dick when I was in Hawaii. Seemed like a good fit.

Julie and Julia by Julie Powell. It’s got it all: NYC, humor, craziness, blogging, food, food and food…and it’s all true.

The devil wears prada is a fast, fun easy read. What Island are you going to in Hawaii?

I absolutely second “Into Thin Air” I’m re-reading it right now and it is the most addictive book, you will be glad you’re sitting on a plane with hours to waste, seriously.
I also second “A Secret History”, very addicitive.
I guess I’m here to second book requests.

Take alot of pictures and post them, feed the folks who can’t go with that warm tradewind that blows so freely. What I’d give to be windsurfing those waves and check’in out that Trump Waikiki.

sarah recommended 2 books:
1) “an omnivore’s dilemma” (author just had an article run in the nytimes magazine, and it makes me want to read the book!)
2) “glass castle” by jeannette walls. and how could you resist a book by a dame with the same name as me?

Glass Castle is excellent. Just finished it for book club. I was a tad leary as I don’t usually read Memoirs.

1984 by George Orwell, might be an insight into why you might consider moving to Hawaii!
