My Bowling Shoes, 10Pin, River North, Chicago
Monday night was FeedBurner’s holiday party at 10Pin. Dallas didn’t bowl. He said it wasn’t his sport. Obviously, it wasn’t mine either. Our first game I got 70, our second game I got 35 and our third game I got 66, which is the same score I got last time I bowled.
There were a lot of discussions over at Chicagoist about what companies do for their holiday parties. Ours was totally laid back, but Dallas’ is always formal and on a weekend night. We skipped it this year because of his birthday celebrations. The best holiday party ever was when we took the money allotted, rented a mini bus, filled it with booze and drove to Mexico. This, of course, was when I lived in San Diego. We stopped in a few small towns along the baja coast to shop and drink more (crazy Mexican tequila shots where they tip your chair back and blow a whistle), before getting to our final destination where we had lobster dinner. It sounds fancy, but Pacific lobsters in Mexico are cheap. We also had a white elephant gift exchange that was kind of out of control after all those drinks. On the way back we had to stop at the border and each one of us had to get out of the bus, say our name, declare our citizenship and what we were bringing back. I’ll never forget my coworker practicing this over and over so he’d be sure to get it right: “Ryan Stark, United States, candlesticks. Ryan Stark, United States, candlesticks. Ryan Stark, United States, candlesticks.”
What did you do, or what are you doing, for your company’s holiday party?

We usually have a nice Christmas Party at an upscale restaurant in the Milwaukee area. We also have a potluck during lunch one day, the week before Christmas.
And those bowling scores really are pitiful. I can’t even fathom how you got a 35. I think Stephanie could probably beat you. I’m the worst bowler on our team, but my average is still 120.
