Halloween Decorations

How cute are our landladies? One day we came home and the common area was decorated for Halloween. To be expected – our landladies are like our moms in a way.

When we were going to get the keys for the apartment it was one of those really hot days over the summer and they couldn’t make it because one of them had had a “fainting spell.” Then the next day it down poured and they were so concerned about us going outside in the rain without a car that they drove the keys down to my apartment in East Village (they live in Roscoe Village). Also, they had an electrician and cleaning lady and handyman go through the apartment before we moved in and were calling me with updates on what all was going on. One day one of the landladies pulled the refrigerator out and got shocked so a bunch of stuff got rewired. I love our apartment. I’m glad to have landladies who don’t own a ton of properties and are really interested in keeping up our place, but aren’t like in our face all the time about it.

This Post is Dedicated to Paul Baker

Paul Baker, who has grossed us all out at work with his many injury photos.

Tonight I was walking home after work from the supermarket and I was pretty weighted down. Big heavy backpack on my back: Check. Heavy bag of groceries in one hand: Check. Heavy purse in the other: Check. I came to that liquor store on School and Damen and there were some papers and leaves on the ground, but what I didn’t see was the circle of plastic, like a loop, a strap. Basically that thing lassoed itself around both of my feet and I face planted onto the ground. And since I was carrying to much weight it seemed to only take a millisecond and have an enormous amount of force. All I heard was the noise of the bag, but I’m pretty sure I made some sort of scream/grunt too. A guy in the liquor store made sure I was ok. I stood up and thought my pants legs would be gone, they were still there, but I just walked as quickly as I could home, everything stinging – I could tell there were some injuries. It was about a 10 minute walk.

The damages? Skinned right palm with a flap of skin hanging. Skinned and bruised left knee. My right knee isn’t skinned but is developing a really big purple bruise. It feels really deep. Both of my wrists are sore and my shoulders hurt too. I guess it was just that jarring. I don’t know what I’ll will be like in the morning but I have a feeling it’s gonna get worse. Right now I’m already hobbling around and the stairs are pretty impossible. I just feel throbbing all over the place right now.

Went to Blackbird, a restaurant widely regarded as one of the best in Chicago, a while back. Anhueser-Busch was there teaching everyone about their high-end beers and microbrews and how to pour, serve and drink them. A special menu was prepared by Paul Kahan, the Executive Chef of Blackbird. I walk over this piece of sidewalk every day on Roscoe Street. Obviously a rat met his demise here when the cement was wet. Gross!

When Dallas is home he never lets me use the grill, which is good because “yay! he’s cooking dinner for me” and bad because “hey, I want to play too!” On Sunday he went to the Bears game and was gone for like 10 hours. I ran (ok, ran/walked) around the neighborhood, came home, showered, went to Whole Foods, then came home, marinated, and grilled up a storm. On the shish kebabs are squash, eggplant, red bell peppers, green bell peppers, mushrooms, onion, and chicken. Then I grilled some fruit and had a sundae for dessert. Yum!
