On Tuesday we had a FeedBurner company outing at Ravinia. The Robert Cray Band and Buddy Guy were performing that night. Ravinia is always nice and relaxing… Thousands of people all gathered in one place to sit out on the lawn, have some drinks, eat some great food, relax, enjoy each other’s company and listen to great music. This time was no exception.

Roscoe Village, Chicago

Sunday night Margaret and Erin and I went to Jewel on Roscoe/Western to get some vegetables to grill at Erin’s. There was a traveling carnival in the parking lot and Margaret really wanted to go. We walked through, but didn’t do anything.

On Saturday I opened up tabs in Firefox of all the places Steph might be interested in visiting. Then I had her look at all the websites and choose. We decided to go to the Sears Tower then to the Shedd Aquarium. Bad news: When we got to the Sears Tower we were told that visibility was ZERO PERCENT. So we decided to just go to the Shedd Aquarium. Bad news: There was an hour-long line just to get into the building. Oh well. We didn’t go all that way not to do something and Steph really wanted to go to the aquarium, to see the things we didn’t see last time*, so we stood. In line. Forever.

We were excited to see the komodo dragon, and while the whole lizard exhibit was cool, the dragon was a let down. Wow. A big dragon. Next! I mean, it’s cool, but we were pretty psyched and then it was just.. like.. there. We did really like the Wild Reef exhibit, though. There were a few other things we wanted to see that we’d already seen before, but for the most part, we skipped the rest of the aquarium. I was getting so tired! Maybe I’m just old or maybe I’m just not used to a 10-year-old kid’s pace and being responsible for someone else, but I was exhausted! Plus, why does she have to keep asking me questions like “What if we get to our stop and you step out but I get caught on the train and can’t get off?” and “What would happen if like a bomb was on the train tracks and the train couldn’t stop in time?” Jeez! Way to stress me out!

We had a good day, though. Later on we went to the movie, filled up on popcorn and then went to dinner at Robey Pizza, a new favorite in our new neighborhood.

* The photos of Steph here are cute, but I liked my animal photos better last time.

Weekend With Steph

This weekend my 10-year-old niece, Stephanie, is visiting from Oak Creek, a suburb of Milwaukee. I don’t think she’s ever stayed with me for a weekend… unless it was when she was a baby and I lived in Wisconsin. Yesterday I took off work early and we mostly just hung around the neighborhood. Which, btw, I think I had to borrow a kid just to fit in around here. Actually, it’s more babies and little kids than older kids in Roscoe Village. Walking around yesterday, Steph and I couldn’t decide if we saw more dogs or more strollers.

This photo is outside Suckers Candy on Damen/School. I’d walked past before, but I’d never been inside, so I thought this was the perfect time. They had all sorts of old time candy, a few kinds of modern candy, some homemade looking chocolates, and homemade ice cream. The ice cream is what we decided to try.

Today I’m not sure what we’re going to do. It poured last night but the forecast just shows clouds today, not rain. Still, clouds would probably make a trip to the Sears Tower not that worth it. I’m thinking maybe the Notebaert Nature Museum would be fun. We’re for sure seeing the new Hilary & Hayley Duff movie, Material Girls, that opens this weekend.

At the Allergist

Allergy Test, Magnificent Mile, Chicago

I gave the allergist that Ray recommended a try yesterday. He was pretty cool. I went in told him what the deal was (ragweed season is upon us), he gave me 26 quick pokes to confirm, let it sit for 10 – 15 minutes*, wrote me 3 prescriptions and I was outta there. I was trying to be proactive. My allergy symptoms haven’t been too bad, but yesterday, MAN! Maybe it was because I was pricked with everything, but I was sneezing like crazy and blowing my nose. My eyes hurt and were so itchy. This morning I woke up with crusty eye boogers. YUM! Can’t wait to pick those prescriptions up today!

* This photo was taken after only a couple minutes. Most of the dots were tree pollen and didn’t do anything, but the two that were types of ragweed and the one that was cats got really huge and red and itched like crazy. They stayed that way until late into the afternoon yesterday, grossing everyone out at work.
