Puerto Rican Pride, Wicker Park, Chicago

I read recently that there are 150,000 Puerto Ricans living in Chicago. This week was the week that they celebrate their heritage. I think there was an “official” parade downtown today, but around my neighborhood everyone wears the colors of the flag, and even the flag itself. My neighborhood is close to Humboldt Park, a neighborhood where a lot of Puerto Ricans live. All day long today they’ll be lapping up and down Division in their cars with flags hanging out, showing their pride. Usually there are a lot of fireworks that go off too. You can’t help but catch their excitement a little, even if you’re not joining in the festivities.

Also, check out this great post Scott made on Chicagoist: Humboldt Park Riots Remembered.
