Egg in a Basket, East Ukrainian Village, Chicago
Growing up we always called this “Egg in a Basket” which I sometimes refer to as “Chicken in a Basket,” because .. you know.. same thing, right? Also, maybe sometimes I confuse the name with the name of a yummy cracker*. I’ve sometimes heard it referred to as “Rocky Mountain Toast.” I think what you call it must be regional. What do you call it?
Wikipedia lists these alternative names (most of them sound disgusting!):
- Spit in the Eye
- Egg in a Hole
- Egg With a Hole in the Middle
- Bullseye Eggs
- Toad in the Hole
- Eggy in the Basket
- Moonstruck Eggs
* Did you know that in Australia they make Vegemite in a Biskit?
We always called it “Bird in the Nest” (I’m from southern Indiana)
I remember one time when I was home sick from school Mom made me this for breakfast and I accidently dropped it on the ground. She cleaned it up and made me another one. Mom’s were great for stuff like that.
I still make this occasionally and yes, I call it “egg in a basket”. I think the name “chicken in a basket” is kind of disturbing, because I don’t really want to relate eating an egg to eating a chicken embryo.
I never really got the name “chicken in a bisket” because, while they are indeed yummy, those crackers taste nothing like chicken.
if you look at the ingredients list on chicken in a bisket, chicken is the last ingredient
We called it a “Box Car” I love making those!!!

We grew up calling this Rocky Mountain Toast. If you saw the movie V for Vendetta, V called them eggies in a basket. Birds Nests are when you fry the egg in the center of a bed of hash browns
The name I remember from childhood has something to do with Whinnie the Pooh as the dish resemples him being stuck in a hole. If you know this name please let me know.
