Chicago Ave Buildings

Old Style Buildings, Near North, Chicago

I used to walk by these buildings on Chicago Ave. (just west of Michigan) on a semi-regular basis. On the first floor and in the garden units, it’s mostly the same run-of-the-mill shops but the storefronts look cute, at least I always thought. I mostly always walked on the same side of the street as the buildings, but once a couple months ago, I walked on the opposite side of the street and realized just how much I really like these buildings and how much they stand out.

I’ve always loved that stretch of Chicago. (And I’m not just saying that cuz I saw John Cusack there once.)

Oooh, I like your capture. The colors are fabulous, and the lighting is perfect!

I’ve always been concerned that it’s just a matter of time before they’re “redeveloped” to resemble that vanity mirror of a project across the street at Loyola. I suspect it still is.

I’m hoping to move to Chicago soon, and your photos always remind me why :)

Those are some of my favorite old buildings in the city. Before I moved here, they were one of my “landmarks.” I always knew where I was when I could find the Jimmy John’s.

The building is Hotel St. Benedict Flats. It is a Chicago landmark, so it would be difficult to get torn down. Here’s some more info on the building, http://www.ci.chi.il.us/Landmarks/H/HotelStBenedict.html

Nice photo. I can only imagine some greedy developer is lusting after that “wasted” airspace above the beautiful old buildings.
