That Sunday we wanted to get brunch and called a few places to see if they’d be busy. “Well, it IS Easter,” they reminded us… oh. right. ok. We just wanted to get some food, starving from our hangovers. Jeannette suggested we avoid crowds and check out this place she likes in Long Island City, Queens called Tournesol. It’s French. And while we were over there we could check out the building where Jeannette & Yvan are moving to. If they ever sell their current place, and if the building ever gets done being built!

Tournesol was really good and the owners/waitstaff were really friendly and didn’t rush us at all. Everyone got the french onion soup, then we each got our own entree (hamburger for me), then we all shared a dessert because Jeannette said we had to. Like we needed an arm twisting on that one!

DOOOONUUUUUTTT

After Jen & Jay’s wedding I met up with Julie and Jess. I thought we were going home, since it was like 2am, but not so … not so at all! We ended up going to 2 more clubs and not getting back to Hoboken til after 5am. Jess drunkenly made some guacamole that we ate in approximately 3.4 seconds and then when she said “I think I hear birds chirping!” we thought we better hit the sack. I think it was 6am. I haven’t done THAT for a really long time! So, it’s not just 30 that’s like being 2131 also is just like 21! We’ll never grow up!

About the donut: At about 3am (who knows, I lost track!) we were coming out of one club, waiting for our group to all come out, and getting ready to go to another. I was freezing and a Dunkin Donuts was open so Jess said “Hey, why don’t you go stand in there?” So I walked in and beelined for the counter and ordered a Boston Creme. I pulled out a 20 to pay (it was all I had) and the guy working the counter told me to keep it and gave me the donut for free. A homeless woman was sitting at a table right near the counter and asked me for change. I was like “uh… Did you see what just happened? I don’t have change, but this guy’s giving away free donuts!” Nothing tastes better than a fresh, free donut at 3:30am!

My First Loco Moco

It all started when Dallas saw this photo of Jen’s fancy loco moco in Hawaii. He started ranting how “real” loco moco doesn’t have scrambled eggs or fancy mushrooms or fried rice or teryaki sauce. I’d never had it before, so I was like “whatever,” but that just made him determined to make it the “right way” for me.

This weekend I got a Peapod order and he made sure I ordered all the fixins for loco moco. Then last night he made authentic loco moco for me for dinner. It’s white rice, with a hamburger patty on top, a fried egg on top of that, and it’s all covered with brown gravy. He said you’re also supposed to have grilled onions on the top too, but I didn’t have any onions. I can’t decide if these photos look delicious or disgusting but I can tell you that it tasted great!

More information on the history of loco moco, a Hawaiian local grind, here and here and here and here.

Julie :: Morell Wine Bar & Cafe, Midtown, Manhattan

Julie had her birthday while I was visiting in New York. I know a bunch of people who were all born the same year as me, Julie included, and every year I get to help them celebrate the age I’m going to become later on in the year, then I take my turn then my friends born after September round out the year. Julie is my second friend this year to turn 31 (I think!).

We met up with her at her nail salon and then took her out for lunch at Morell Wine Bar & Cafe. It had nice outdoor seating and the weather was great.
