My First Loco Moco

It all started when Dallas saw this photo of Jen’s fancy loco moco in Hawaii. He started ranting how “real” loco moco doesn’t have scrambled eggs or fancy mushrooms or fried rice or teryaki sauce. I’d never had it before, so I was like “whatever,” but that just made him determined to make it the “right way” for me.

This weekend I got a Peapod order and he made sure I ordered all the fixins for loco moco. Then last night he made authentic loco moco for me for dinner. It’s white rice, with a hamburger patty on top, a fried egg on top of that, and it’s all covered with brown gravy. He said you’re also supposed to have grilled onions on the top too, but I didn’t have any onions. I can’t decide if these photos look delicious or disgusting but I can tell you that it tasted great!

We really miss black and white photos…. That thing looks so greasy and…is it raw?

Looks good but you should really try the St. Louis version called a “Slinger”

Fried potatoes, 2 cheeseburger patties, 2 fried eggs, slathered with chili and finally, diced onions and more cheese.

ACK! That other loco moco really WAS wrong. Who puts scrambled eggs on a loco moco?!?!

This one, on the other hand, looks fabulous. But you really do need to try one with the onions. Mmm . . .

You can get a Loco Moco in Chicago. There’s a Hawaiian place on Clark St. in Lincoln Park called Aloha Grill. Good stuff. It’s pretty authentic to the joints widely found throughout Hawaii. Here’s their site, http://www.alohagrillbbq.com.
