Victoria Lautman & Elizabeth Kostova, Magnificent Mile, Chicago
Since I’d had so much fun when Frank McCourt was on Writers on Record with Victoria Lautman, I decided to see this month’s guest, Elizabeth Kostova. She’s the author of The Historian, one of my favorite books last year. Kostova took 10 years to write this book and it was interesting to hear how it came about and all the work she put into it. Also, I’ve emailled with Victoria Lautman but I hadn’t met her in person. I saw her hanging around the lobby before the show began and took the opportunity to introduce myself. Totally cool.

Rachelle,
I am dying with jealousy that you got to meet Elizabeth Kostova. Are these author events open to the general public?

i know! i told her this lame story when she was signing my book about how i travelled with it and everyone thought i was crazy.. because it’s huge: hardcover and about 650 pages. most people like to travel with smaller paperbacks. i remember laying out in the sun with jess and julie reading it and julie was like “what is that? the bible!?”
these events are open to the public. i think people don’t go to them much because they don’t have much of a budget to market them. we did do a post on this on chicagoist, which you should be reading! here’s the schedule for upcoming months.

Tee, hee, hee!!!
Alas, these author events are just one more reason that I cannot wait to finish grad school and (hopefully!) get a job in Chicago. So much more to do on the weekends, so many places to go, so much more restaurant variety, good public transportation, etc…
I traveled with that book too over Christmas and everyone was like, “What’s the deal with the book?!” It was really weighing me down when I was lugging my stuff around the airports, too.
Side note: I actually found your website last summer b/c I was looking for cool Chicago pics of random daily life (yours are quite good) and have been reading ever since!
Thanks for the links, by the way.
