Maybe it’s a family thing or maybe it’s a Wisconsin/midwestern tradition, but around the holidays we’ve always baked a lot. Then when you’re invited to holiday parties or when people stop over it’s really easy to make a tray of treats for your party host or your guests. This month I have a few parties to go to and I also wanted to revisit some old recipes so I baked up a storm this weekend.
Here’s one of the things I made: Seven Layer Bars. Super easy to make and they’re really rich and sweet. Almost like a candy bar. This is something my mom would make a lot when we were growing up. I used her recipe, as follows:
Seven Layer Bars
From: Mom
Melt 1/2 cup of butter in a 13×9 pan. Then sprinkle in (in order):
- 1 1/2 c. graham cracker crumbs
- 1 c. chocolate chips
- 1 c. butterscotch chips
- 1 c. flaked coconut
- 1 c. chopped nuts
- 1 (14 oz) can sweetened condensed milk
Bake at 350 degrees for 20 - 25 minutes.

I just made my first batch of the season on Sunday. We call them Hello Dollies. I don’t know why. I’m from Wisconsin, so maybe it is a midwestern thing. Awesome way to display the recipe!

As a kid in Rochester NY (not the mid-west but heading that way) my friend’s mom she made the cookies shown here and also called them “hello dollies” just like Sarah does.

Hi. I made these bars over the weekend. I traded the butterscotch chips for coarsely crumbled english toffee. The bars turned out yummy.. thanks for the recipe. I am getting ready to try the pecan fingers sometime this week.

instead of condense milk can we replace that with Skim Milk (Soy Milk)? The cookie bars look yummy.
