Dude, My Next Gig’s at Potbelly

Potbelly Sandwich Works, Wicker Park, Chicago

I’ve been to the Potbelly on Michigan Ave. and on State St. about 1,000 times each, but I’d never been to the one in my neighborhood that opened on Damen Ave. Why would I ever want to go there, since there are so many other sandwich shops to choose from and I always went to the Potbelly downtown on my lunch break? But now, since I’ve been spending so much time at home, I decided to check out the store on Damen for a cheap lunch.

The interior is pretty much the same kind of feel as the one on State. The one on Michigan is in the Nordstrom mall’s food court so they can’t really control the feel as much. The biggest difference with the store on Damen is that they had a guy sitting up in a little balcony playing music live. He was pretty good, it could have been worse. I kept thinking he should play some Jack Johnson, that he’d be good at it, but he didn’t. I thought it was kind of odd that he didn’t have a sign or anything saying his name, and since he was 8 feet up in the air there was no way for you to tip him or talk to him. I wondered if this individual restaurant made a deal with the him or if Potbelly, as a franchise, supports local musicians this way.

On a side note, this is how you know you’re spending too much time at home: Oprah becomes a part of your daily routine. And not only that, but when Kanye West, whose latest album you love, is on the show and sings “Hey Mama,” a song that you were obsessed with and played 1,000 times in a row on repeat, to his mother.. right to her face.. and makes her dance with him. .. it makes you cry! Step away from the Oprah, Rachelle.

We learned last night that going to an old Chicago institution, like The Berghoff, the day after they announced that they’ll be closing in February – it’s not that great of an idea. The line to get in the restaurant was rediculous and the bar was super packed. There were lots of people going there just to get their photo taken under the sign. Crazyness.

Chicken Cordon Bleu

One good thing about having some time off is that I can cook more. Last night I made Chicken Cordon Bleu. I was kind of nervous about making it. I thought it’d be really tricky and I haven’t worked with meats that much. And I HATE touching raw meat. But this time I tried to forget I was touching raw chicken while I rubbed spices on the meat and rolled and dipped it. Then I thought it’d all fall apart, but it didn’t.

I was nervous about using a Cooking Light recipe for something that is known to be so rich and fattening. I read the reviews online and made a couple modifications – italian breadcrumbs instead of plain breadcrumbs, provolone in the place of the mozzarella – and it turned out excellent. Oh, also, I never use sodium-free anything. Ketchup, chicken broth, it always tastes like crap.

On Christmast evening we went to Dallas’ Auntie Gail’s house in Mt. Prospect for dinner and a gift exchange. She made beef tenderloin that had to be some of the best I’ve ever eaten. I even took seconds, and I rarely even eat steak.

Later on the $10 grab bag/gift exchange got pretty crazy but Dallas and I were able to team up to get the gift we wanted. It was a set of Japanese bowls that we suspected that Doug & Naoko brought. Luckily we were right. I think next year there’s going to be a rule in place because our strategy was copied by others and then the game got repetitive and, I guess, unfair.

Oh, and there was a little football game on. The Packers lost, but I’m glad it wasn’t a total blow out. I was afraid of what was going to happen to me in a house full of Bears fans. Luckily, they were pretty merciful. Except for Chris, who is like 9 years old and full of all kinds of trash talk.
