Future Oberweis, Wicker Park, Chicago

About a year or so ago Kristin took me to Oberweis for the first time but when we got there it was closed down. And not just for the day, for good. As far as I know, that was the last Oberweis in the city. But now there are plans to open a new on on Milwaukee and Paulina, close to my apartment, so I’ll for sure be trying it out soon.

There are a ton of Oberweis’ in the suburbs. When I at my parents’, I’ll occasionally stop for a chocolate banana milkshake.

Though it’s around $5 (”A $5 shake? They put any bourbon in there?”) and probably 7,200 calories, it is dee-licious.

Oberweis is tasty, but Jim Oberweis is a stridently pro-life Republican who ran for the Senate nomination, just so you know.

    Ok Jim, don’t go there.

    (eyeroll)

Eyeroll, nothing. I use to love the glass gallon bottles but haven’t given another nickel to Jim-bo since his campaign, which included the worst kind of anti-hispanic race-baiting I’ve ever seen in an (allegedly) mainstream Illinois candidacy. Guy’s a creep.

Well you didn’t say there was anti-hispanic race baiting. however, to boycott someone because of their political views (not racist views) is just lame ….

“Goddamn! That’s a pretty @$%# good milk shake.

    Told ya.

    I don’t know if it’s worth $5, but it’s pretty #$%@ good.”

    Hi folks,

We’re the owners of the Oberweis store opening in Wicker Park. We’re delighted to see that many of you are happy to have an Oberweis store coming to the area. We’re longtime Chicago residents and are excited to open a store in the city we love, where we can offer a fun place for families and friends to sit and eat ice cream (you don’t have to order a $5 shake; most ice cream cones are under $3:) For what it’s worth, since our last names aren’t Oberweis, the store is an independently owned franchise. We plan to open around November 1st . . . Hope to see you there!

It isn’t lame to boycott a company whose profits go to the pockets of a narrow-minded bigot with political aspirations. More people should know that the $5 milkshake includes an indirect contribution to Jim Oberweis’ campaign fund.
