Boat on a Crane, River North, Chicago

I don’t know why this boat was on this crane, but it was like that for several days last week on the Dearborn St. bridge.

It might have something to do with the boat beneath the bridge. The last few times I’ve been near that bridge, there’s also a barge underneath with a mini-crane on the bottom. (The type to hoist people up to wash windows, repair windows, etc.) I think it has something to do with the lakefront construction/landscape project on the south shore of the river.

This is Marina City! Boats on the water. Parking Garages in the middle and condos on the top! Built by Bertrand Goldberg. Famous architect who also built Sydney Opera House and the Chase Manhattan Bank in NYC.

that’s marina city to the north east.. but it doesnt explain the boat on the crane.

chris, i think you’re right. i don’t know what that barge is doing under there. maybe the boat was in the way and they had to crane it out!

That may be how they secure it at night — I’ve seen construction compressors and other expensive but mobile equipment stored that way to prevent theft.

    B. Goldberg also worked on the famous TWA terminal bldg in JFK (now Terminal 5). They just try now to merge boats and airplanes…

benjy - but why would someone be allowed to store their boat like that ON the dearborn st bridge?

  • 7 TWA // Aug 29, 2005 at 9:59 am

To prevent someone to do something bad. Or to prevent something bad to happened. That’s all.

i know why someone would want to protect their boat. i mean who would be allowed to do it on a city bridge.

If you really want the answer ask them:

Imperial Crane works along Chicago’s lakefront in conjunction with Taft Contracting to install a new ride at Navy Pier.

I’d think it’s used by the construction company to move around the water while working.

benjy is right… its to keep it from being stolen.

Nice shot. What’s an interaction designer?

I’d like to know what an interaction designer is, too.

I never knew what an interaction designer was either, so I looked it up. Wikipedia gives a pretty good, albeit broad, description.

It’s part of a city requirement when you’re working above the water like on the bridge to have a guy in the water in a boat in case someone or something falls in.

I think its used to weigh down the crane when its not in use….thats what i thought of

boat is used for worker safety during hours of construction when not in use it is hoisted by the crane to keep it out of the water and so it does not get stolen
