Frozen Custard From Kopps Taken Home, Oak Creek, WI

No trip to Wisconsin is complete without frozen custard, so on the way back from New London, before going to Oak Creek so Amanda could change and go to work, we stopped off at Kopp’s. I’d never been there before, my frozen custard experiences have been limited to Culver’s, which is a larger chain and accessible through more of WI and the midwest. Kopp’s only has 3 locations. We went to the one in Greenfield.

The differences? Culver’s has kind of a homey feel where Kopp’s interior is really stark and more like a factory. And at Kopp’s there’s no dining area, just an outside park-like area where people sat on benches and ate. Culver’s is really well known for their ButterBurgers. At Kopp’s the burgers are good, but so huge, there’s no way you could take a whole one down and still have room for the frozen custard. Also, Culvers has a bigger menu than Kopp’s. Having said all that, Kopp’s was really, really good. Both places have a flavor of the day available, as well as chocolate and vanilla frozen custard. Kopp’s was started in the Metro-Milwaukee area so it’s more of a local gem, Culver’s was started in Sauk City, WI but is everywhere now, and has more of a big chain feel.

For dessert, instead of each getting a serving of the flavor of the day, Cookies & Cream, we decided to get a big container to take home and eat.

One other thing to note: Kopp’s frozen custard can be ordered online.

Next up, to check out Omega, another local favorite. Oh, and check out this site that lists all of the daily flavors at all of the Milwaukee-Metro area custard shops.

And finally, here’s a chart showing on a scale of all things ice cream, how I rank frozen custard.

  1. When I was down there for work training a couple weeks ago, a bunch of us went out to lunch and a couple girls from the area took us to Kopps the first day and Oscar’s the second ! YUM! I wish I were at Oscar’s today DEATH BY CHOCOLATE~

  2. Are the data for that graph available?

Even though they’re marketed as ice creams, Ben and Jerry’s and Haagen Dazs products are also frozen custards, as they are made by heating egg yolks with sugar and milk.

  3. Ben and Jerry’s and Hagen Daz does have egg yolks in their Ice Creams, but they both also have seperate products labeled as Frozen Custard that contain both egg whites and yolks.

  4. Kopp’s in Brookfield has a dine-in area – which is bigger than it’s outside area. I suppose it has to do with location on the busiest road.

Remember walking to Culver’s with me and eating chocolate eclare custard on the walk back? YUM. I’d say that was my favorite ever. Bits of donut in custard. The best of both worlds.

  5. Kopp’s reminds me of a custard chain in Green Bay by the name of Storeheims(sp). Their southside location has a very industrial feel to it. Although they have seating, it’s stone picnic benches. Quite uncomfy, but quite good custard.

When I was pregnant with Evan, we lived about 1.5 blocks from the northside Storeheims. I’m PRETTY sure that might have had something to do with the 45lbs I put on during my pregnancy. But at least we walked there!!!!!!
