Thanks for the new word, I knew that such a thing existed, but I absolutely didn’t know it’s name.
I didn’t know gentrification had negitive connotations, I thought it was usually viewed as a good thing.
if you look at gentrification as the forcing of lower-income earning people out because of an increased “whitening” of a neighborhood’s population – then you can see why it’s bad.
If the place I’ve lived in for years and years, all of the sudden becomes too expensive to live in (rent, taxes, etc) and I have to leave, JUST because the area’s property values have gone up due to the people who’ve come IN … sure, I’d be a little upset.
it is definately controversial. When a Starbucks goes in, that’s usually the sign that the neighborhood is has turned. . .I heard when the Starbucks went in in Wicker Park it got a brick thrown through its window like every day.
Gentrification is like Capitalism itself. It has it winners, and it has it’s losers.
I’m not particularly wild about genrification’s resultant displacement of law abiding low income folk. But it does run off low life street level drug dealers which is good for any neighborhood I think.
Gentrification = Not so good because it makes housing costs go up. People buy property and flip it for profit. No investment in the neighborhood. Investment is in their pocketbook.
Concentrated poverty = Worse because it traps poor people into a life of poverty. Makes do-gooders feel warm, fuzzy, and liberal inside….as long as it doesn’t exist in their own neighborhood.
Revitalization of a neighborhood = Much better!
The goal should be to make a neighborhood more “walkable” and safe so that its children will have the needed resources to become responsible citizens. It should also create a sense of community so that people will want to remain and be more committed to its well-being.
gentrification is a natural process that is going on in every industrial town and city
and will carry on consistantly in the future. This evolution of genrification is not a
bad or a good thing. However it consists of winners and losers.
This is happening in Denver! Its brutal, the homeless population has jumped!
Without question, gentrification has some downsides. However, I would argue that the positive aspects far outweigh the negative.
