A couple months ago I was walking around the neighborhood and saw that someone had put a perfectly fine plant out on the curb, left for the garbage. I snagged a couple pieces of it and took them home hoping they’d grow roots in a glass of water and they are, but I don’t have any idea how long I have to let them grow before planting the plant. Any ideas?

My mom used to let them sit in the glass until the roots almost filled the base. I love my mom.

That’s a philodendron - very hardy, doesn’t like direct light. They also don’t need much to start growing from; a couple inches of roots and some leaves should do it, so go ahead!

thanks for the info, kevin. i also didn’t know what kind of plant it was. just one of those that everyone has because you can hardly kill it even if you try! and it multiplies like crazy, and so easily. i was going to plant it last night but wasn’t sure if the roots were long enough.. hence this post. i’m glad they’re long enough!

Looks more like a pothos plant to me. But then again, my masters degree in horticulture probably doesn’t mean anything. (Nice try Kevin.)

this photo of a philodendron and this photo of a pothos look the same to me.

your link to the philodendron said its scientific name is the golden pothos, so they are the same.

Another tip is to pinch off new growth at the ends before the plant turns into long, stringy vines. This will encourage new growth from the base of the plant, which will eventually result in a denser, more pleasing shape (similar to those in the photos above).

Didnt have time to read everyone elses comments so I dont know if this is repetitional but if you soak the roots in water and leave them for a couple days you’ll notice that the plant will grow roots. Then while you are getting the dirt ready ect. Wrap the roots in a soaking wet paper towel. Volia! Not sure what plant this is but it works with Spider plants as well.

Golden pothos, or pothos ivy (Epipremnum aureum) and heartleaf philodendron (Philodendron scandens) are different species. They look very similar because the heart-shaped leaf works really well for tropical vines.

The leaves you show above don’t look varigated like the pictures you referenced.

I did the same over the winter when someone put a pot full of a long stringy plant out by the dumpster behind my building. The plant is called Wandering Jew. It was popular when I was a kid, but I don’t see it around anymore. I now have a small bushy plant that has already been trimmed for more cuttings twice.
