Yesterday I went with Amy, Scott, Jen, and Adam to see the horses race at Arlington Park. I hadn’t been to a horse racing park for about 5 years when I went to Del Mar in California so it was cool to check it out again. Most everything was the same but at Del Mar I don’t remember betting at all and this time I placed $2 bets on several different horses in different races throughout the day.

One race I picked who I thought would win but then was tracking down an ATM and lunch so I missed placing my bet. Of course, the horse I wanted placed 2nd. Then once I said who I thought but just didn’t bet and that horse won. Finally I got a payout on the last race of the day. I placed two separate $2 bets on that race on one of the horses I picked came in first. I won $8.80.

Overall, I came out only slightly ahead, but at least I wasn’t in the hole!

Yesterday morning the weather looked great so I went to check out North Avenue Beach. It’s the first of Chicago’s city beaches I’ve been to. But then it started raining and the weather was really temperamental so I only stayed about an hour or so. I can’t wait til the weather is nicer so I can go back again.

Hancock from Jewel

Wicker Park, Chicago

In Manhattan you always know which way is north/south/east/west by looking up to see where the Empire State Building is in relation to where you’re standing. In Chicago it doesn’t work like that. All of the skyscrapers, instead of being in the middle of the city, are to the far east side at the lake and you definitely can’t see them from everywhere. But sometimes you do get a glimpse of the buildings from the neighborhoods. Here’s the Hancock from the Wicker Park Jewel parking lot.

These were some of my favorite photos from Chicagoist’s First Birthday Happy Hour. It was amazing to get the Chicagoist team together with all of our readers and fans and to think that just over a year ago I’d just moved here and didn’t know anything about anything and now we’re running a successful website that’s challenging the way the local traditional media does things.

Rosemary Chicken Salad

May 26th, 2005 · 5 Comments

This past weekend I went through some of my past issues of Cooking Light and pulled out pages with recipes I thought looked good. Sunday night I made Rosemary Chicken Salad. I had everything on hand to make it with the exception of yogurt and fresh rosemary. I debated whether to use dried rosemary that I had in the cupboard because it seems like every time I buy fresh herbs I pay $2 – $3 and only use a very small amount then throw the rest away when it goes bad. While at the store I ended up buying fresh rosemary and I really think it made a difference with this recipe.

The leftovers tasted even better the second day because I think the flavors were then fully blended. One other thing – where do you get smoked almonds? I looked at the store but ended up just toasting some regular almond slivers I had at home. It added a nice crunch to the salad.
