Most of the action at the Trump Tower construction site right now is drilling. Everywhere. The top three photos above were taken in the morning. The bottom photo is the same hole but in the evening.
If I understand this right, the metal tube in the ground that they drill inside is the caisson and the supports in the bottom photo are rebar? Am I close?

That’s about right. First they insert the caisson, then they use an auger to remove all of the soil. Then they fill it with concrete.
Here are some more photo of the construction:

You are pretty close.
Technically, the steel tube is called a “casing”. It is used to keep soil from the surface from falling down the hole as they are drilling. In most cases, the steel casing is removed after the concrete is placed, and the casing is then reused for the next caisson.
The shaft that is formed by the concrete poured into the hole is called a “caisson”. A caisson is designed to transfer the heavy column loads down through the soft layers of soil (in this case mud) to soils or rock with stronger bearing capacities below.
Caissons are also used in cases where there are layers of soil that would experience excessive settlement once the building was built (cases where the building would sink into the ground).

This is a great series of photos, Rachelle.
I had no idea of the dimensions just looking at the first drill photo - then the hard hats of the constructionworkers gives the photo a sense of scale. The construction photos are great.
