My dad was recently visiting our relatives in the south and sent me these photos of my Great Aunt Juanita who lives in Alabama and evidently cooked up a down-home southern meal while he was there. He said they had ice tea, sweet potatoes, poppy chicken casserole, collard greens, green beans and corn pone. Corn pone and poppy chicken casserole sound suspicious, but I thought the food looked yummy. I haven’t seen Juanita for a couple years but every time I do she is just as fiesty as ever.
PS. Is this site turning into a food blog or what?

Rachelle-
Keep up the food blogs! They look so tasty and remind of when I had time to REALLY cook! I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to cook and try new recipes, but just don’t have the time.
Steve and I used to cook together a lot before we had kids. Of course, we both gained 25 lbs a piece, but we had a great time doing it!!! Now, I just try to make SOMETHING my kids will at least TRY!
But, my 5 yr. old, Evan, counts refried beans and corn tortillas as his favorite foods and will eat salsa hotter than I can stand so there’s hope yet!!!!!!
Keep up the tasty work!

That spread looks delicious. I’d take a home-cooked southern-style dinner over some trendy restaurant any day of the week. I love learning peoples’ family culinary traditions, because they are a personal history passed down for years and years. We have some old German recipes in my family that go back to the 1800’s.
Rachelle, have you eaten at “Spring” in Chicago yet? I think it is close to where you live. I went there once with the girl I was dating at the time, and it was fantastic food. You’d like it, because the building also has some historical significance. It used to be a big Russian (I think) bath house. Go take Dallas there. You have to make reservations way in advance, but it is worth it. You might run into my ex-girlfriend there with the fancy new guy she’s dating.
