Paczki, Wicker Park, Chicago

Paczki, Magnificent Mile, Chicago
A few days ago there was some discussion on Chicagoist about Paczki and where the best place to get the Polish pastry is. Two of the suggested bakeries are at the end of my street so I made a mental note to try them out. Paczki day isn’t until next Tuesday, fat Tuesday, the day before Lent, so I didn’t think I’d be able to try them until then but yesterday the WGN morning newscasters (who I loathe) were talking about paczki so I decided to stop in and see.. and they were there.
Alliance didn’t have that many paczki. Each one was a different flavor. I got the apple. I brought it to work making sure not to smash it, heated it up for a few seconds in the microwave, and dove in. YUM!
This weekend I want to try to get to Andy’s Deli to see how theirs compare.

Being 100% Polish and living in a town (DC) where there is NARY a decent Polish deli around, I’m envious beyond words of your accessibility to paczki and the fantastic delis of Chicago.
If you’re looking for great pierogi, go to Kasia’s!

I’m also 100% Polish and have absolutely no Polish food here in Portland, OR. My Mom used to make paczki when I was little. She filled them with fig jam and covered them in powdered sugar. Heaven!

First of, that apple paczki, *drool*, it looks mighty tasty. Don’t think I’ll ever find that in my neck of the woods. Second, that first pic is gorgeous, I love how the red in the woman’s scarf, and the signs stand out, great photos!

From visiting your blog, something tells me you appreciate good food.
I do too.

Why do you “loathe” the WGN morning news folks? They rule the school! Especially Paul Konrad. He’s my nephew.

so where do you find Polish food (and paczki) in DC???
Marty Z // Feb 9, 2005 at 2:55 pm
I don’t. I have to cook it or I’ll go over to my Mom’s.
There is a Russian/Polish deli in McLean, VA (20 minutes driving from me) that offers some decent Polish food .. but nowhere near the goodness of paczki — (Mama Z pronounces it “pown-chki”)

More Paczki at Alliance Bakery
Alliance Bakery, Wicker Park, Chicago I noticed on Saturday that Alliance Bakery now has a whole Paczki menu posted outside. Why do you think the strawberry is more expensive? See also: ยป Paczki From Alliance Bakery…

I am looking for a good polish bakery that direct mails their product. Since I moved from OhioI cannot find a good nut roll in Charlotte, NC. This pastry has been such a Christmas tradition.
