Homemade Tamales

When I lived in San Diego there was a Mexican woman who would come around our office complex selling all different kinds of tamales. Everyone would freak out and buy them up and eat them for lunch for the next several days. We called her The Tamale Lady. When someone saw her in the hallway or the courtyard they’d run around yelling “The Tamale Lady, The Tamale Lady” and everyone would get their money out and wait for her to come into our suite. That was 2000 – 2001 and probably the last time I had a really good tamale. Until tonight.

Carolina took orders from our department last week and over the weekend she went and fetched a bunch of tamales for us. I don’t know where she got them, she said they were from her Tamale Lady. I got 6 chicken and 6 beef and tonight we stuffed ourselves.

I don’t think I’ve ever had a tamale. Am I missing out? Would I like it?

i don’t know.. but i would bet $5 you wouldn’t since you are kind of a picky eater! Here’s a site all about tamales.

You can’t find them in your neighborhood? Tamale vendors seem to be all over the west side of the city, usually little more than a person with a cooler full of tamales on a card table on corners.

My boss (who lives in Rogers Park) and a co-worker (who lives in Humbolt Park) bring them in a lot on Fridays for breakfast for the dept. I’ve brought them in on a few occasions, but since they don’t sell them in Lincoln Park I have to venture over to the West Side on the way to work to find them.

i’m sure they’re in my neighborhood but for some reason i feel better getting them from someone at work than from buying them from some random dude on the street.. which makes no sense bc i used to be down with street meat in nyc.

Yum, tamales. I never learned how to make them, but I have family and friends that do, so I feed my habit thanks to them. At the places I’ve worked at, we’ve always had a “tamale lady” who passes through too. Nan, if you do try them, just remember, don’t eat the husk!!

Tamale Lady is hard to catch.

    Here today, gone tamale.

They actually don’t sound too bad. Yes, the husk might taste nasty though. I’m not sure where to find these in Milwaukee…
