I can’t stop! Yesterday when I was walking by the Sun-Times there was a lot of action going on that I couldn’t resist taking photos of. Especially the welding. There were people welding both in the grids where the street used to be and inside the building.

The only thing that doesn’t quite make sense to me is the order of operations. I guess I would have expected them to take the whole building down first then do whatever they had to do to the street. The City of Chicago, Suprising us every day…

Are they welding or cutting through the steel?

I’d say they are cutting through the existing welds so they can remove the beams.

i kind of wish they would just explode the thing, but then my nice photo essays would be over.

I’m torn between feeling bad for those poor suckers, because they have to work outside, and jealous, because I know they’re probably getting paid very handsomely for doing so.
anyways - keep the photos comin’, Rachelle :).

yes, but think how dramatic that one last photo would be.

Hey Rachelle, did they whistle at you when you took your photos of their work??

Rachelle: Date your photographs in the captions–it will make for a nice chronicle.

What! No Caterpillar Machines?*lol* I work at a Caterpillar machine dealership and before I started working there I used to not notice or care what kind of machines are at construction sites. Now, everytime I see a machine I look for the Cat logo and it’s someone else’s, I go, eh, who cares…those things suck! No Cat? What’s up with that? =)

Do I see a “coffee table book” coming?
Pretty soon we’ll be watching the building going UP.
Great photoessay - I especially like the welding shot and the one of the toy red scooper in the hole.
I took some photos of the Time Warner Building in NYC going up - I should post them.
