Mamma Mia :: Ford Center for the Performing Arts Oriental Theatre, Theater District, Chicago
For my mom’s birthday in November I got her tickets for Mamma Mia! at the Ford Center for the Performing Arts Oriental Theatre. Yesterday she came down and we did some shopping on Michigan Avenue, which was all lit up and festive. Then we went up to my office quick for a view of the city. We then strolled over the Chicago River to The Loop and walked through the Christkindlmarket on Block 37 and the Daley Center (the Picasso looks out of place!).
Dinner was at Petterino’s. We shared a bottle of Shiraz, grilled mahi mahi with arugula and lentils, and Cape Cod scallops with an apricot sauce and rice pilaf. That was all very good, but what I’ll remember is the dessert. We had chocolate macaroons with both a caramel and a chocolate sauce for dipping. So moist and good.
After dinner we had some time to kill so we walked around Marshall Field’s to look at the holiday windows (I’ll post more on this later). Then off to the theater for Mamma Mia!. I didn’t think I knew many Abba songs, but there were quite a few I recognized. Even if you didn’t know ANY Abba songs, I think Mamma Mia! would still be a fun time. Lot’s of comedy, lots of songs. At the end, after the encore the cast just had fun and played some Abba songs. Everyone in the theater was standing up and clapping and singing and dancing in the aisles.

Why do you write “mama” with only a middle “m”?! :p Here we say “mamma” with double “m”.
Happy birthday to your “mamma”, from Italy

They let you in with a camera? I don’t think I’ve ever tried to do that at a theater, but at concerts, they’re total bastards about that.

good catch, ardesia. I spelled it wrong but fixed it now.
Jim - I don’t think they can really police it any more.. with everyone with their cell phone cameras and stuff. i’ve brought my camera to every concert and play and show i’ve been to for the past 2 1/2 years.

Ma Bowden I guess you could say about Shell taking you to see Mamma Mia “How could I ever refuse, I feel like I win when I lose”!
Glad you both had a good time.
PS
“No no no no Waterloo couldnt escape me if you wanted to.
Waterloo knowing my fate is to be with you…”
I always liked that song.

im going to have abba songs in my head from now til new years
If you change your mind, I’m the first in line
Honey I’m still free
Take a chance on me
If you need me, let me know, gonna be around
If you’ve got no place to go, if you’re feeling down
If you’re all alone when the pretty birds have flown
Honey I’m still free
Take a chance on me
Gonna do my very best and it ain’t no lie
If you put me to the test, if you let me try

my definition comes from the urban dictionary
Asshat
One who has their head up their ass. Thus wearing their ass as a hat. Asshat.

I saw Mamma Mia a year or two ago in Chicago. It was a blast then as well!
Happy Birthday Ma Bowden!
Josh, Riley, and I are watching Steph and Jess tonight.

Recently I went to see both the Producers and some crappy musical I shall try to forget. Damn, I remembered, it was Camelot. Fudge.
Anyway, while they’re to uppity to ask you to give up your camera or check everyones bag most theatres will throw a hissee-fit(sp?) or even throw you out if they catch you taking a picture.
I polititely and casually asked the security at the historic Ford Theatre in Detroit if I could take pictures after the show and they refered me to the manager who told me flat out NO. What a -itch she was. I almost told her to try and stop me. It’s a freaking historic building after all and I am a salivating hound of architecture, but alas I decided to let it go. I didn’t really want pictures of some old smelly “dated” interior anyway.

Oh, I should also state that craptacular amounts of Detroit architecture including the renowned Michigan theatre have been destroyed and even scavenged in the last 20 years. The Ford and the Fox theatres are the only architecturally significant theatres left.
Just so you know, I wasn’t just cherry picking. In fact I have hundreds of Pictures of Detroit and the Exterior and Lobby of the Ford building I was planning on putting online. If someone wants to see them just say the word, that’s all the incentive I need. I haven’t updated my photo album in to long. In fact I have pictures of Grand Rapids, MI and Toledo, OH to put online also.

when i was walking in my camera was out from taking the photos outside and the guy taking the tickets said i could take photos all over the theater lobby but that i couldn’t take them during the show.
i waited til the end to take photos just in case.. the show was pretty much over anyway.

Hope you both had a good time.
That is the Christmas market that Brain and I were telling you about last weekend. We walked past it on the way back from the Bear’s game.
The last concert I was at, they were insanley protective of photos. If they saw you take one, even with your cell phone camera, they gave you a warning and told you to put it away.

Rachelle that’s a great Abba song and way back when the new wave band “Erasure” did a credible cover of it. If you can find it out on the “internets” as our president calls it I bet you have the correct software to play it and then it will really stick in your head!
Of course my favorite Erasure song is their (for them) greatest hit “A Little Respect”.
