I can tell that major work is going on inside the Sun-Times Building, but I wish I could see it better! Most of the windows are covered with either wood or plastic except on the ground floor, where it looks like there’s still office furniture inside. Outside the hole on the north side of the building has grown just a little bit.. and for some reason on the west side of the building they’ve got oxygen tanks hooked up with tubing to the upper floors.

My guess is they are using the oxygen tanks as the fuel for oxygen cutting torches. If the whole building is coming down eventually, they’ll want to cut certain support beams in specific locations to help the building come down the way they want it to. They probably have to keep the oxygen tanks outside due to safety regulations, and run the supply tubing all the way up to where they are working.

Gone in Name, Not by Fire

I took these photos about a week ago when John at Ascent Stage alerted me that they pulled down the “Sun Times” name on top of it’s building. He has better photos of it actually happening here. Of course,…

The oxygen cutting torches are used to cut any metal out of the builing that IS NOT STRUCTRAL. They do this for recycling purposes. The building will be taken down 1 floor at a time using small bobcats that are equipped with hydraulic hammers. The reason for this is the buildings close proximity to the river. Using any other means of demolition would not be controlled or safe on that project.
