Weather Bell, The Loop, Chicago
I saw this bell on a building on the corner of Monroe and Clark in the Loop. It hangs above a Walgreens Pharmacy, although I think it must be associated more with the building than the drug store. At first I thought it was a holiday ornament. When I looked closer, it is definitely a permanent fixture. And there is some curious weather reporting going on. When I went by it was lit up “warmer” but there were also “no change,” “colder,” “snow,” and “rain” options. Anybody have any more info?
The building, 77 W. Monroe does (or used to, not sure) house Bell Federal Savings & Loan.
Looks like it is a barometer.
I took a picture of this during the day..not as nice as your photos are
I have to swing by there at night.
Yep this use to be the Home of Bell Fedrral bank now LaSalle. the res is for warmer and green lights would be no change and white i thnk is for colder and the whole bell would lite up in those colours
I worked for Bell Savings in 1965 and 1966. I can give you a little info as best I remember about the weather bell
Are you still curious about the Weather Bell
