Chicago Banks

I’m trying to decide if I should switch from Citibank to a local bank in Chicago. Does anyone have a bank here that they really like that has a lot of convenient locations?

  1. Rachelle,
I would highly recommend moving from Citibank. They charge for a lot of services that other institutions provide for free.

I personally bank at Charter One.. lots of free stuff…free checks for life and an ATM at every White Hen…

  2. Bank One – which is now JPMorgan Chase. You’ll be covered in Chicago and New York. What more could you ask for. Screw Citibank, Charter One, and WaMu.

  3. BankOne also has a special right now that if you open a qualifiying checking account you either get $50 deposited in your account OR a $125 gift card to Target.

    Yay free money!

  4. Find a medium sized local bank, that is my advice. Dont help the cause of Global MegaBanks Inc.

PS Go Bob LaFollette, er I mean John Kerry!

  5. I like Washington Mutual, who is new to the area:
    – No fees.
    – No ATM fees to people from other banks. (The right way, imo.)
    – Free online bill-pay for IL accounts.
    – The staff have always been friendly and helpful.

Their locations seem to target the yuppier parts of town. Which is fine by me, because I usually hang out in those areas.

I used them in CA as well. I have always been happy with WaMu, though in the early days their online banking was a touch crappy.

  6. I’d say bankone also, I used to work at LaSalle and know you can get hit with tons of fees if you are not careful, (read small print)! LaSalle is pretty limited on ATM’s. Bank One just find a Walgreens or Dominicks and you’re covered.

  7. i’d avoid washington mutual at all costs. while they’re all over the place and have friendly staff, the bank cares only about gobbling up other banks for its own profit. after they refused to investigate a stolen check of mine that was cashed at a CA branch, i’ve closed all of my accounts with them, filed a police report, kissed several thousand dollars goodbye, and am going to put the remainder of my money in a bank that’s in the business of protecting its customers’ money rather than its own…
